Frank Zappa’s Unaired Concert Special to Be Released After More Than 50 Years

In June 1974, Frank Zappa and his exhilarated band, the Mothers of Invention, extended an invitation to a select group for a rehearsal session at their Sunset Blvd. studio in Hollywood, California. For over two hours, they put on a show while a film crew recorded the event and an audio truck captured the sound. Regrettably, the video and audio tracks didn’t match up.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Zappa’s scheduled June concert meant for television broadcasts remained unreleased – until May 9th, that is, when it will be aired as a special titled “Cheaper Than Cheep” through Zappa Records/UMe.

Greetings everyone, we’re thrilled to invite you to an extraordinary television event, being put together especially for your enlightenment, right within our Mothers of Invention rehearsal space at 5831 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, California. Zappa mentions in the recording. To help orient those watching, I’d like you all to turn around and face each other, so everyone can get a glimpse of where we are and the genuine feel of this place. As you can see, it’s quite economical.

Under the direction of Ahmet Zappa and in association with Frank Zappa, the team consisting of Joe Travers (Vaultmeister) and Ahmet Zappa have announced the upcoming release of “Cheaper Than Cheep”. This unique production will be accessible only through Zappa.com, uDiscover Music, and Sound of Vinyl. The film version of the “Cheaper Than Cheap” concert will be offered in multiple formats, with a Blu-ray edition (equipped with Dolby Atmos) being one of the options. This Blu-ray edition is included in a premium box set that comprises a 2CD and 3LP of the live performance, which can be purchased separately.

This boxed collection additionally offers a comprehensive 12-page booklet filled with uncommon photographs and insightful annotations by Travers, as well as a moving tribute from musician Ruth Komanoff Underwood who played percussion at the event. The Blu-ray disc contains four bonuses – two performances, a blooper reel, and a lengthy clip from the out-of-print Claymation film titled “The Amazing Mr. Bickford.” Furthermore, you have the choice between a Blu-ray video, a 2CD set, a standalone soundtrack on heavyweight 3LP black vinyl, or even just the soundtrack alone on vinyl.
