25 Years Later, This Cult-Classic Capcom JRPG Has Been Modernized For PC

Thanks to the conservation work by GOG, the cherished Capcom JRPG Breath of Fire 4 has been re-released as a new PC version. This updated version of the classic game is devoid of DRM and has been optimized for contemporary PCs, making it compatible with Windows 10 and 11 operating systems. It also offers both English and Japanese language options, along with full support for modern controllers such as the Sony DualSense. If you’re intrigued, you can purchase it for $10 on GOG.

As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share some exciting enhancements that have been made to this classic game: Breath of Fire 4. The team has meticulously restored missing sound effects, introduced new rendering options, and resolved numerous technical issues that would previously lead to frustrating crashes to the desktop. Originally launched for PlayStation in Japan and the US back in 2000, the PC version followed suit in 2003. This updated edition promises an even more immersive gaming experience!

The game is set in a fantastical realm where two dominant sky-based empires were isolated from one another for centuries due to an impassable sea expanse. Eventually, contact was established, and with it, conflict ignited between these celestial powers. A year after this first encounter, the game presents a vibrant assortment of characters, among them Ryu, who has the unique ability to transform into a formidable dragon. Joining forces with various combatants, Ryu embarks on a mission to thwart an immortal monarch from achieving divinity and wreaking havoc upon the world.

Besides Breath of Fire 4, GOG has been quite active, expanding their preservation program by incorporating various games. This project commenced in November 2024 with the Dino Crisis series, followed by numerous other games being updated for PC by GOG. They also maintain a “Wishlist” where users can vote on desired games to be added to GOG. Currently, there’s a strong interest in bringing back classics such as Snatcher, Alice: Madness Returns, and Dragon Quest V for a second chance.
