At the 9th Annual Fashion Los Angeles Awards this week, Chappell Roan surprised me yet again with an unconventional celebrity outfit. However, it’s the ‘Hot To Go!’ singer’s ensemble that has stolen my heart. While a mini dress and tights might not sound remarkable, she added an intriguing twist: a lower-face covering “ruff” reminiscent of styles from the 16th century. The overall look definitely transports me back to that era.
It’s often mentioned that Mary Queen of Scots and Queen Elizabeth I both had red hair, and Chappell Roan appears to embody a style straight from that era. Although her dress might have been considered too short for the time (a bit like the “Shame” meme from ‘Game of Thrones’), as a costume, it’s quite unexpected yet entertaining with its grand ruff, flared sleeves, and striking print. Check it out!
I adore a well-matched pair of tights with a dress, and these ones are truly remarkable. They seem custom-made for the ensemble, as they’re lace but subtly incorporate bits of the dress material, creating an extra layer of pattern. The overall effect is accentuated by some relatively modest black pumps with closed toes.
Moreover, notable figures like Betsy Johnson and Genesis Webb showcased their unique, quirky styles during the gathering as well.
Towards the end of last year, she made quite a statement at the VMA awards with a full-blown Medieval look. More recently, at the Grammy Awards, Roan donned an outfit inspired by Edgar Degas, designed by Jean Paul Gaultier. In March for a Valentino show, she managed to enjoy both her cake and eat it – wearing a grand ball gown that seemed to take inspiration from Marie Antoinette, complete with a black bodice and red velvet waistband. It wasn’t the first time she had drawn on Marie Antoinette’s style either.

It seems she might not be drawing directly from the Tudor era, but undeniably, she has been exploring various fashion periods in recent times. Yet, there are still numerous historical styles open for her to experiment with, if she wishes to do so.
Previously, the singer known as “The Pink Pony Club” mentioned to Jimmy Fallon that she often finds fashion inspiration in places such as drag and burlesque performances, emphasizing her belief that fashion shouldn’t be too somber. Her style ranges from lingerie-inspired outfits to avant-garde creations. An instance of this is when she dressed up as a butterfly for Coachella, which generated considerable attention. I’m genuinely excited to see what unique fashion choices she makes in the future.
You can see more of her look in Faces of Music streaming for those with a Hulu subscription.
