Shocking Kill in Until Dawn Movie Left Studio Execs Speechless!

In the film Until Dawn, there are some particularly grisly deaths that you might come across in cinemas this year, and one particularly shocking execution left studio executives stunned.

Back in the days when I was a hardcore PlayStation gamer, if you’ve played that classic game of ours, you won’t find it strange at all. It had its fair share of heart-stopping scenes that could make your stomach turn. From watching a wendigo brutally tear off someone’s head, to the gruesome sight of an eye being plucked out, or even a jaw getting violently torn apart, this game was not for the faint-hearted.

The recently released horror movie by David F. Sandberg (known for Lights Out and Shazam films) deviates from its source material. It revolves around a band of companions who stumble upon a secluded valley’s house, only to discover themselves trapped in a terrifying time loop. Their sole means of escape is enduring… until the break of dawn.

Yet, just because it deviates from the original doesn’t make it any less gruesome. The characters meet brutal and gory ends, and one demise left the production team taken aback.

Until Dawn’s sledgehammer kill shocked the studio

From the beginning, Until Dawn was intended to carry an R-rating. As the game is quite violent and graphic, Sandberg emphasized the importance of maintaining this level of intensity. He explained to TopMob that the movie needed to match the game’s brutality in order for it not to appear less intense, hence the need for an R-rated classification.

Yet, this doesn’t imply that the studio didn’t initially attempt to make it more palatable, if only a little.

Initially, I felt a bit apprehensive when the studio inquired, “Could you film these scenes in a slightly less graphic style too, for our records?” I wondered, “What is your reason for this request?” Sandberg stated.

Fortunately, the team ran out of time to create a milder, less violent variant of the movie, instead opting for an intensely gory approach across every scene. The studio, as it turned out, was content with this decision once they had seen it; according to the director, they gave their approval afterwards.

In an unexpected turn of events, a single fatality left everyone startled. At a certain juncture, one character suffered a gruesome blow to the head, courtesy of a sledgehammer. This shocking scene was skillfully crafted using both real-life effects and visual effects (VFX).

In the film for quite a while, there was an object resembling a doll that we repeatedly struck with a large hammer, yet its head didn’t shatter fully. Consequently, we filmed some visual effects against a blue screen later and incorporated them to make it appear as if the face had actually been destroyed, according to Sandberg.

When Sandberg presented the final version of the movie to the executives at the studio, that particular scene was something they hadn’t encountered before. In his words, “[They] weren’t anticipating it, so when it unfolded, it was quite shocking and excessive. The studio exclaimed, ‘Ugh!’ And I thought, ‘Oh my goodness, are they going to make me remove that scene, aren’t they?'” he reminisced.

“But they didn’t.
So they were they were fine with it, which was great.”
