Crumbl Cookies, a well-known U.S. cookie company, is involved in a lawsuit by Warner Music Group due to accusations of using copyrighted music in their TikTok advertisements without proper licensing.
Crumbl Cookies is a popular American cookie chain that was established in 2017 by two relatives, Jason McGowan and Sawyer Hemsley. Initially, their goal was to create the ideal version of the classic chocolate chip cookie.
In no time at all, Crumbl’s cookies gained immense popularity, causing quite a stir on social media, especially on TikTok, thanks to their enormous size and the opulent weekly-changing flavors they offer.
But, being on that specific app might put Crumbl in a tricky situation because they are currently involved in a legal dispute over some of their videos.
WMG seeks $23.85M from Crumbl in copyright lawsuit
On April 22nd (Tuesday), Warner Music Group filed a lawsuit against Crumbl in a federal court district in Utah, claiming that Crumbl had incorporated “at least 159” of Warner’s music recordings in videos they posted on their Instagram and TikTok accounts without permission.
In the lawsuit, WMG alleges that Crumbl has utilized these tunes to enhance their reputation and generate enormous sales without providing any payment to WMG.
According to the lawsuit, although the Crumbl Videos played a significant role in the Defendants’ achievements, they failed to compensate for the right to utilize the soundtracks and musical pieces incorporated within these videos.

Among the tunes under discussion are hit singles by well-known musicians such as Mariah Carey, Lizzo, Beyoncé, Dua Lipa, Bruno Mars, and others.
In simpler terms, WMG is seeking compensation of up to $150,000 per unauthorized song used by Crumbl, which, if all 159 songs are penalized at the maximum rate, could amount to a significant sum totaling approximately $23.85 million.
Additionally, they’re aiming for a long-term ban on Crumbl, meaning they wouldn’t be allowed to use any music falling under their label, in any capacity.
Besides Crumbl, other significant food businesses are likewise embroiled in lawsuits. The sports beverage brand co-owned by Logan Paul and KSI, Prime Hydration, is also a central figure in multiple legal disputes. Most recently, it was sued by a visually impaired individual who claimed that the company’s website was inaccessible to him and other users with similar disabilities.
