Warning: minor SPOILERS for Thunderbolts* are ahead!
In approximately a week’s time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film previously scheduled for 2025 will instead be occupied by the “Thunderbolts” movie, following closely after “Captain America: Brave New World.” This 36th MCU flick brings together antiheroes and former villains such as Bucky Barnes, Yelena Belova, and John Walker, who find themselves embroiled in a plot orchestrated by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. A fresh clip has been unveiled showcasing their confrontation with the CIA director. After viewing it, I’ve developed a new hypothesis regarding the fate of Taskmaster, one of the main characters in “Thunderbolts.
Fontaine’s influence within the Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown steadily since Julia Louis-Dreyfus first appeared in the role. Nearly three years after her last appearance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, we’re now set to uncover Val’s background and discover what she’s been scheming. However, the Thunderbolts are gearing up to thwart her plans, as you will soon find out.
The five main characters (Bucky, Yelena, Walker, Red Guardian, and Ghost) meet up with Valentina at the old Avengers Tower. She throws some harsh words their way. But you might be wondering, where’s Taskmaster? Well, the plot thickens. Take a look at this snapshot from the first Thunderbolts trailer:

In this scene, Taskmaster is hanging out with the others at Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s new place. This brings up a question: where is Valentina herself in the clip?
Before I present my theory, it’s important to note that many people, including myself, suspect that Taskmaster will meet his end in the upcoming Thunderbolts. The character Antonia Dreykov, portrayed by Olga Kurylenko and introduced in Black Widow, seems to be receiving less attention in promotional materials compared to her fellow team members. This has sparked speculation that she might suffer a similar fate as Slipknot did in Suicide Squad.
I Was Surprised To Hear Thunderbolts* Director Hint At How The Movie Connects To Avengers: Doomsday
David Harbour’s description of that thrilling Thunderbolts scene featuring Bucky on a motorcycle has shattered all my preconceived notions about it (and now, regrettably, those vivid images are etched in my mind).
After witnessing that electrifying sneak peek of Thunderbolts, I must admit, my initial assumptions might not hold true. Earlier, I had a strong feeling that Taskmaster’s fate would unfold when Lewis Pullman’s Bob succumbs to the Void persona, leading to chaos at Watchtower. However, upon further reflection, I suspect her death will occur earlier in the movie, perhaps just before the Void takes hold or even much earlier as the team encounters Valentina.
As a cinephile, I must confess, the first scenario leaves me doubting if there’s a lethal trap waiting for Taskmaster at Watchtower. It seems rather improbable to me. The second option, though, appears more plausible. My gut feeling is that the character may have been digitally added to that frame from the Thunderbolts trailer, suggesting we won’t see her in that scene at all. Instead, Taskmaster might meet an untimely end much earlier in the movie, possibly immediately after our main characters cross paths for the first time. This tragic event could potentially drive them to collaborate and unravel the mysteries unfolding before them. Whether this prediction holds true or a different sequence of events transpires, one thing is clear: this clip doesn’t bolster the idea that Taskmaster will survive for long in this movie.
As a fervent fan, I can’t help but feel an exhilarating anticipation as I eagerly await the grand unveiling when “Thunderbolts” graces the silver screen on May 2. Subsequently, the captivating saga of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” will unfold, marking the third and concluding Marvel Cinematic Universe film for 2025, set to premiere on July 25.
