On April 24, the White House announced it had been bombarded with over 10,000 public comments about its grand plan for artificial intelligence. Yes, 10,000. The sheer volume suggests that AI isn’t just the buzzword of science fiction geeks anymore — it’s the new favorite pastime of basically anyone with an internet connection.
The usual suspects showed up to the party: OpenAI, Meta, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. Because of course they did. Alongside these tech giants, ye olde academia, non-profits (the ones who politely complain), and industry groups also chimed in, probably with lots of words that mean “complicated.”
From the pile of feedback, a few themes popped up like unwelcome pop-up ads: more US energy investment to keep the AI servers humming, foreign policy tweaks to help American AI firms elbow their way to global dominance, and better infrastructure here at home to stop things from crashing every five minutes.
Many companies also pushed for an “open, innovative framework” — fancy talk for “let us do cool stuff but don’t let it completely wreck society,” presumably.
The White House opened the comment floodgates back on February 6, seeking ideas to “sustain and enhance America’s AI dominance.” Donald Trump chimed in, vowing to make the US the “world capital” of AI and crypto, which sounds like a tech startup’s fantasy office motto.
National Security: The Paranoia Edition
Some of the feedback had a distinctly paranoid flavor. Andreessen Horowitz, a venture capital firm that delights in big words, warned that AI development isn’t just a tech problem — it’s a national security issue. They apparently imagine AI as that unruly teenager who could either save the world or set the house on fire.
OpenAI got in on the action too, pointing fingers at China, describing it as an “authoritarian state” with scary superpowers like mobilizing resources super fast. Meanwhile, back in January 2025, a Chinese company called DeepSeek launched its R1 model, which caused mild panic in US tech circles and sent stock markets on a rollercoaster ride.
AI and crypto, the dynamic duo of future tech, are increasingly intertwined — like Batman and Robin, but with more algorithms and fewer capes.
