Chloe Zhao‘s next film “Hamnet” has secured a prime awards season release date.
Drawing inspiration from Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel, “Hamnet,” this film will imagine the life of William Shakespeare’s son who passed away young, offering a gripping portrayal of the emotional tale that likely sparked the play “Hamlet.” In this adaptation, Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley take on the roles of William Shakespeare and his spouse Agnes, while Joe Alwyn plays Bartholomew and Jacobi Jupe portrays Hamnet.
Zhao collaborated with O’Farrell, whose book has sold over two million copies in the U.S. and U.K., been translated into 40 languages, on writing the screenplay. “Hamnet,” produced by Steven Spielberg and Sam Mendes, is slated for international release under Universal Pictures International.
I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be making an appearance in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “Frankenstein” spinoff, “The Bride!” This time, I’ll be sharing the screen with the talented Christian Bale. Meanwhile, Mescal, who’s currently gracing Broadway in “A Streetcar Named Desire,” has officially been cast as Paul McCartney in Mendes’ forthcoming Beatles biopic. In this four-part epic, the charismatic Irish actor will star alongside Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, and Harris Dickinson as John Lennon. Can’t wait to be part of both these amazing projects!
Chloé Zhao became the second woman in history to receive an Oscar for Best Director, for her work on “Nomadland” in 2020. Some of her other notable films include “Eternals” produced by Disney, as well as “Songs My Brothers Taught Me” and “The Rider.
