Julia Garner, who won an Emmy for her role on “Ozark”, is discussing her debut into the Marvel Cinematic Universe this summer in “Fantastic Four: First Steps”. In this movie, she portrays a unique take on the Silver Surfer character, specifically Shalla-Bal, the female version of the cosmic figure that was initially depicted in 2007’s “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
In a chat with Entertainment Weekly, Garner shared insights about her character from the recently released “Fantastic Four” trailer. She reminisced about her meeting with director Matt Shakman at a Burbank restaurant, which encompassed such a broad scope of topics that she initially believed she wouldn’t be considered for the role.
She expressed her initial confusion about the character Shalla-Bal not being the Silver Surfer as she had assumed. However, she decided to take on any role offered. Being a huge fan of Matt Shakman’s work, she felt it was essential to meet him. During their conversation, they delved into various topics from the 1960s, including communism and brutalist architecture. She didn’t expect to get the part because the meeting seemed disconnected. However, they later informed her that she had gotten it, leaving her surprised and unsure if their connection played a role in the decision. Essentially, she believes their rapport could have been a factor, but you never know for sure.
Similar to Marvel comics’ characters, Shalla-Bal serves as the herald for the colossal planet-consuming entity Galactus, who is voice-acted by Ralph Ineson in the film. Clad entirely in shimmering silver, she navigates the cosmos on a celestial surfboard, requiring Garner to perform motion capture for the first time during her acting career.
She shared that it was her initial encounter with that technology, and it was nothing short of mind-blowing. The whole experience felt dreamlike and intense. It was a real rollercoaster. Typically, last-minute preparations involve hair and makeup, but this time, it was all about wires.
To nail my surfboarding scenes, I immersed myself in yoga practice: “I can’t help but dream that it feels like the intense training montages from ‘Rocky’. Alas, I can’t claim that. Instead, I focused on my regular fitness routine, including some Pilates and lots of yoga. The reason? I knew I’d be holding various positions all day while surfing. It was an odd experience – despite being in motion-capture, I wasn’t gorging on donuts and burgers every day and leading a sedentary life.
Despite not yet having a glimpse of her character’s appearance in the film, Garner hinted that her portrayal of Silver Surfer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe would delight fans by offering a unique take, owing to the film’s distinctive retro-futuristic atmosphere.
She found it incredibly stylish and unique, resembling something you might see strutting down a runway. It wasn’t exactly ‘fashion-y’, but there was an air of fashionable appeal about it. This is something she always appreciates, particularly in Marvel productions where aesthetics play a significant role. People are drawn to the visual aspect, and she believes this costume fits the bill. She added that at its core, it’s still a comic book adaptation, and despite only seeing the trailer and some mockup scenes, she’s eagerly anticipating it.
