It’s surprising that Hidetaka Miyazaki’s “Elden Ring” is back in the limelight, considering all the excitement surrounding Bethesda’s recent release of the remastered version of “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion”. However, this has indeed occurred, due to the actions of former Blizzard head, Mike Ybarra.
On his Twitter account, Ybarra expressed his doubts about remastered games that are twenty years old, citing the high standards set by recent releases such as Elden Ring from FromSoftware.
Elden Ring has changed the gaming industry, or has it?
Although Ybarra’s views on the recent Bethesda release may appear valid to a degree, there are still numerous aspects that require further examination before firmly agreeing with such an assessment.
I have doubts about remasters that are 20 years old. What was once impressive, now updated, can no longer compete with contemporary masterpieces like Elden Ring. The standard for open world RPGs has progressed significantly due to what Elden Ring delivers.
I eagerly hope to be disproven. However, I’m currently…

Instead of bringing back “Elder Scrolls IV” merely out of nostalgia, its remastered version actually honors the innovations it introduced at the time. Of course, today’s games may surpass it in terms of visual appeal or technology, but the game’s fundamental essence will always remain timeless and fresh, no matter how much modern game design elements are added to it.
In addition, it’s hard to make a fair comparison between Elden Ring and a remastered version of Elder Scrolls IV, as Elden Ring is designed to offer something fresh to gamers, while the remaster aims to update every element of the original game to appeal to current fans.
How Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered and Elden Ring are both timeless classics

It seems appropriate to clarify at this moment that Ybarra’s tweet didn’t carry any serious or negative intent. Instead, he’s also expressing a challenge and sharing his hope of being disproven, which he explicitly stated by saying “I would love to be proven wrong.“.
As a gamer, I can’t help but acknowledge that Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Elden Ring truly redefined the standards of modern gaming, offering unprecedented combat fluidity and captivating storytelling. However, it’s important to remember that comparisons are only meaningful when they’re deliberate; otherwise, each game, like FromSoftware’s Elden Ring and Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls series, stands as a timeless classic in its unique way.
We also fervently wish for Ybarra’s claims to be disproven, because if they are, it could serve as the spark that ignites a developer’s passion, leading them to eventually create and deliver us an exceptional remastered version of Bloodborne – something we didn’t realize we craved but truly deserve. (Indeed, this is a plea for a Bloodborne remaster.)
