‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Director ‘Tried Relentlessly’ to Convince Sarah Michelle Gellar to Return for Sequel Despite Her Character’s Death: I Had to ‘Pitch Some Crazy S—’

Regrettably, despite Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s diligent attempts, she was unable to resurrect Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character, Helen Shivers, for the revival of “I Know What You Did Last Summer.

During a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, Robinson revealed her persistent attempts to include Gellar in the latest “I Know What You Did Last Summer”. Unfortunately, these efforts were unsuccessful as Robinson found it impossible to work around the fact that the character of Helen Shivers has perished.

Robinson shared with Entertainment Weekly that she made numerous attempts to cast Gellar in the new “I Know What You Did Last Summer”, but ultimately failed because the character of Helen Shivers, who is deceased, proved a challenge to incorporate.

Robinson admitted to bothering her and suggested an unusual idea: ‘Suppose you’re not truly deceased, but in hiding instead?’ Sarah replied, ‘I was as good as frozen. I was the epitome of death.’ Robinson countered, ‘But what if that weren’t true?’ To which she responded, ‘I am Sarah Gellar, dead and gone.’

With Gellar out of the picture, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., who were there from the beginning, will reappear in the horror sequel. Additionally, new faces such as Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nichols, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Hauer-King, Billy Campbell and Gabbriette will join the cast.

Following the announcement of the latest “I Know What You Did Last Summer” movie, Gellar clarified to People magazine that she will not appear in the film. She emphasized that her character has definitively met her end.

Sarah Michelle Gellar mentioned that her friend Robinson is in charge, and since then, we’ve been joking about her having an informal role. Essentially, she’s the one who checks if things are consistent, often reminding him, ‘That wouldn’t occur with those characters,’ so in a way, she unofficially serves as the continuity supervisor.

“I Know What You Did Last Summer” hits theaters July 18.
