10 Baffling Plot Holes in Fear the Walking Dead

Among numerous spin-offs of “The Walking Dead,” I stand as the most successful one. Debuting way back in 2015, five years following the premiere of the original series, it aired for an impressive eight seasons that concluded in 2023. Unlike its predecessor, I introduced a fresh cast and shifted the setting to Los Angeles, while also tying the storylines together by incorporating characters from the original show through crossovers.

Initially, the show had a compelling start, but as it progressed towards its later seasons, it struggled to maintain consistency. Particularly, the plotlines became increasingly implausible, characters lacked depth and their arcs were underdeveloped, leading to repetitive episodes. Additionally, there were certain instances and recurring themes that seemed illogical within the context of the show.

In simpler terms, we can say that Morgan Jones is a character who originated from the TV show “The Walking Dead”. His storyline indicates that he took a solo trip for his psychological well-being. After embarking on a lengthy journey, he eventually encountered a group. Given his nature, it’s not surprising that Morgan soon became a leader within this group.

Despite repeatedly guiding us into perilous landscapes, making questionable choices, and putting our lives at risk on numerous occasions, I found myself following Morgan’s lead rather than seeking a new leader. Even when he stubbornly maintained that “there has to be a better way,” it seemed we were often teetering on the edge of catastrophe – with some even brushing with death or succumbing to it.

Yet, it was intriguing to observe that none among us questioned Morgan’s ability to lead, nor did he ever consider delegating his responsibilities to someone else. With such a diverse group of individuals, one might have expected someone to step forward and take charge, but Morgan persisted in his role without apology or seeking external validation for his decisions. This was an unusual dynamic that I couldn’t help but ponder upon.

In the case of many seasons of “Fear the Walking Dead“, it’s as if everyone just jumps on a horse and gallops away into the sunset. While horseback riding is a common activity, it’s unlikely that every character had extensive prior experience, making it difficult for them to mount, guide, and control a horse effectively, let alone those who have never ridden before.

It appears that some people may have learned horse riding skills off-camera, which viewers are led to assume is the case. However, it’s striking how many of them seem proficient in riding without any visible training or experience, even demonstrating advanced equestrian maneuvers like dodging walkers with ease and grace.

A significant aspect of Althea’s personality revolves around her former profession as a journalist. She captures everyone she encounters using her video camera, with a dream that in a future reset, someone might discover her work and it will convey an untold story. This trait is commendable, and it’s not surprising that this is the action that keeps Althea grounded and connected to humanity.

It’s fascinating to ponder over how her video camera battery stays consistently powered. Perhaps it’s through means like tapping power from her vehicle or even solar energy. Yet, considering the scarcity of resources, I find it intriguing that a video camera might be among the least likely devices to receive power, given its non-essential nature despite her caring intentions. What adds to the mystery is that I’ve never seen her or anyone else not charging the camera, implying it’s always ready to record.

When the team encountered Grace, she had been trapped at her workplace, a chemical plant, where she’d been exposed to lethal radioactive substances that turned her colleagues into roaming, dangerously radioactive beings. Incredibly, though, Grace appeared unaffected. It wasn’t surprising when she eventually fell ill, as it seemed she was finally experiencing the impact of the radioactive material.

However, the situation took an unexpected turn, suggesting that Grace had only experienced morning sickness. This pregnancy, which originated from a one-night stand with a colleague, seemed to leave her in good health overall. It seems rather illogical that Grace, who was surrounded by those succumbing to their exposure, appeared miraculously untouched.

In numerous situations, this character seems to defy odds that are almost impossible, surpassing the resilience of any other character across all franchise series, even the originals. However, the most astonishing instance is when Virginia shoots him, causing a severe wound and leaving him bleeding as a horde of walkers advances. Incredibly, he persists through this life-threatening situation; his injury becomes infected (presumably with the bullet still lodged within), yet remarkably, he doesn’t perish.

In this scenario, it’s rather puzzling that Virginia shot him but chose not to eliminate the threat by finishing him off. Previously, she had attempted to kill Morgan on numerous occasions. She had a golden opportunity to eradicate him completely and prevent future issues. Given her past actions, which were harsh, and the recent attempt to shoot him in the face that failed, one would expect her to verify his death before departing. Remarkably, this inconsistency is highlighted in Virginia’s actions during season six.

In one scenario, the team encounters a fresh danger when an unscrupulous faction learns about the oil fields they’ve been utilizing and aims to seize it. They issue warnings of violence and destruction, so in an attempt to maintain harmony, Luciana offers to remain with them. She will guide them through the operations, as long as they guarantee that no one else is harmed, and everyone else can leave unscathed.

The team members concured, and without much fuss, they continued their travels as though this wasn’t a significant event. However, considering their history of valiantly defending each other, it seems unusual that they didn’t make an effort to rescue Luciana when she was left behind. Instead, they appeared to stand by idly or perhaps overlooked her predicament for some time.

Madison’s comeback during the last season was a poignant, sad effort to reintroduce shock into the show as its popularity began to dwindle. It was believed that Madison perished in one of the incidents, but she managed to keep the walkers confined within their community so her children could flee while it was on fire. This selfless act meant sacrificing her own life, yet she went ahead with it. However, against all odds, she miraculously survived, though she now requires an oxygen tank due to severe smoke inhalation.

Ignoring the constant flow of oxygen tanks, the plot itself felt unconvincing. It was hard to believe that she resorted to kidnapping children for PADRE, given her risk-averse nature, especially when it came to finding her own kids. This action seemed out of character for Madison, even considering her life’s drastic changes since then.

In one of their most touching moments, June and John choose to legally marry each other. They also hold a small, intimate ceremony to strengthen their union, knowing that June might be taken by Virginia and her followers soon. They manage to find suitable attire for the occasion, with June donning a wedding dress to give the ritual a more formal feel.

In a world where comfort and protection are not just luxuries but survival necessities, given the presence of creatures that crave human flesh, she initially ventures out with her new captors without donning her usual attire. However, it’s plausible that she later changed, possibly for symbolic reasons rather than practical ones. The risk of endangering herself by remaining unprotected, making a swift escape or exposing vulnerable skin to potential bites, simply wasn’t worth the message it might have conveyed.

In the storyline, Troy is reintroduced as a character to complete the narrative loop. When he first appeared on the series, it was revealed that Troy had mental instability. He developed a friendship with Madison, who knew how to exploit his vulnerabilities. However, when she discovers that her actions at the ranch pose a threat to everyone, she enraged and brutally strikes Troy with a hammer, seemingly leaving him for dead.

It’s astonishing, almost unimaginable, that he not only lived through this ordeal but also escaped without any brain damage. Remarkably, he had already lost an eye in the past after Madison stuck a spoon into his socket during one of the altercations. Incredibly, he survived that trauma as well. It’s hard to believe that such severe blows would result in just a concussion; it seems more like a joke to suggest so.

In the last part of the series, the team is making efforts to confront PADRE. Their journey leads them back to locations similar to where The Walking Dead initially unfolded, with Dwight and Sherry reappearing at the Sanctuary. Since they could move effortlessly between the Sanctuary and Alexandria earlier, being near Alexandria now seems plausible due to their proximity, even if it’s a day’s journey away, help could be sought.

Initially, Morgan and Dwight transitioned from the primary series, and they have both visited Alexandria before. They are aware of its location and understand that it’s where a significant part of Rick’s group was living. However, neither of them contemplates journeying to Alexandria to seek out Rick or anyone else they knew in the past to assist them in their struggle. They trust the inhabitants of Alexandria. Despite Alexandria appearing to be the most sensible destination for these children, they never consider going there as their objective is something else entirely.
