Nintendo Warns Switch 2 Lottery Will Leave “Significant” Numbers Of Fans Disappointed In Japan

For Japanese consumers eager to acquire the Switch 2 console directly from Nintendo, it’s unfortunate news as the company has announced that many applicants won’t be chosen in the My Nintendo Store lottery sale. In a statement, Nintendo’s president Shuntaro Furukawa expressed his apologies for this predicament and explained that the volume of applications surpassed the company’s anticipation.

In simpler terms, Furukawa stated via Nintendo’s Japanese X account (translated by VGC) that they have been stockpiling many components ahead of time to manufacture the Nintendo Switch 2. They announced and started accepting applications for a lottery sale for it on their My Nintendo Store on April 2nd. Amazingly, they received 2.2 million applications just from Japan, which was much more than they anticipated. Unfortunately, this number is far greater than the amount of Nintendo Switch 2 units they can deliver through the My Nintendo Store on June 5th. As a result, they expect a large number of applicants won’t be selected in the lottery announcement scheduled for April 24th.

Nintendo is set to conduct another raffle in Japan for its consoles, however Furukawa emphasized that the supply of Switch 2 units will remain scarce. The company aims to boost production of the Switch 2 beyond the initial launch phase, and suggests Japanese enthusiasts consider purchasing the console from other retailers or online stores as they work on increasing availability.

Starting April 24, US preorders for the Switch 2 will commence officially. From May onwards, Nintendo of America will sell the console through its own store. Those who match certain requirements will get priority access. These fortunate individuals will receive an email invitation, valid for a period of three days, enabling them to preorder the Switch 2, as long as they have a Nintendo Switch Online membership and have been subscribed for at least a year, with a minimum of 50 hours played on their account.

Following a spell of doubt, Nintendo disclosed that the pricing for Switch 2 in the US will remain constant – $450 for the standard Switch 2 and $500 for the one bundled with Mario Kart World; however, the prices for first-party accessories are going up. Before its launch on June 5, Nintendo has also been providing additional information about the Switch 2, such as the fact that the new Pro Controller can be charged much more swiftly compared to its predecessor.
