In simpler terms, it seems that Chris Hemsworth’s character, Thor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), might be planning to leave the franchise.
Ever since Thor, the God of Thunder, graced the Marvel Studios screen back in 2011’s Thor movie, I’ve had the privilege of appearing in nine Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Notably, I was the first actor to secure a role in Avengers: Doomsday when the casting news broke during the 2026 film’s announcement.
It’s been speculated that the forthcoming lineup from Marvel Studios may mark the conclusion of Thor’s adventures within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel Studios Is Planning Send-Off for Chris Hemsworth’s Thor
As per The Cosmic Circus reports, Marvel Studios plans to bid a fitting and grand farewell to Chris Hemsworth’s character Thor in their future projects. This idea seems to be drawn from issue #32 of New Avengers (Volume 3).
A goodbye to the original Avenger doesn’t necessarily imply that Marvel is planning to sever ties with the Extraction star or his character, it might simply be a change in the narrative arc.
It’s been hinted that the narrative of Avengers: Secret Wars and future Marvel Cinematic Universe stories might incorporate Thor Corps and other aspects of Thor’s comic book lore.
Furthermore, before Chris Hemsworth retires his hammer, fans will finally witness the long-awaited reunion of Thor and Loki, as their last on-screen appearance together was during Loki’s death scene in Avengers: Infinity War, preceding the Loki series on Disney+.
Is Marvel Studios Really Retiring Chris Hemsworth’s Thor?
As a movie enthusiast, let me clarify that the buzz surrounding the upcoming Thor film is merely speculation at this point. It’s crucial for fellow fans to approach these reports with a healthy dose of skepticism.
Despite Chris Hemsworth being one of the original Avengers stars, Marvel Studios appears to be focusing more on welcoming back MCU veterans rather than letting them go, as demonstrated by Robert Downey Jr.’s return, the comeback of the Russo Brothers, and possibly Chris Evans’ reappearance as Captain America.
Love and Thunder,” Chris Hemsworth expressed his requirements for another Thor appearance, stating, “It needs to be something distinctive.” He also hinted that a significantly altered character might offer the most promising path ahead.
It’s possible that since Phase 6 continues the Multiverse Saga, and Marvel Studios might not yet have said farewell to the actor, another character could take over the role of Thor Odinson within the correct Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In essence, this character we’re discussing could resemble the audience’s Loki experience, as the Deity of Tales from “Loki” is a Variant. This also bears a resemblance to Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom and potentially Chris Evans’ role in “Doomsday,” if the rumors are accurate.
At present, it appears that fans can look forward to Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as Thor in Avengers: Doomsday. It’s intriguing to see what the actor portraying the God of Thunder will share about his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe next.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on May 1, 2026.
