Oblivion Remastered Is Rated M At Launch, Unlike The Original Game

This week saw the surprise release of Oblivion Remastered, but not so surprising was its Mature rating from the ESRB. Initially, when Oblivion debuted in 2006, it was given a Teen classification; however, this rating was quickly adjusted by the ESRB.

Following its initial release with a T (Teen) rating, the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) later had to amend their decision and upgrade it to Mature (17+ years), as some content within the game wasn’t disclosed in full when it was first submitted for rating evaluation.

The shift in ratings for the game was partly caused by graphic depictions of violence that turned out to be more intense than expected within the game, and the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) additionally noticed a partially exposed female character model that could be unlocked in the PC version through mods. This feature, whether intentionally or unintentionally included in the game’s files, led to Oblivion receiving a “Nudity” warning until the problematic files were corrected with updates.

In simple terms, Oblivion Remastered retains the same ESRB rating as the original Oblivion due to content like violence, blood and gore, mature themes, strong language, and use of alcohol. However, despite this shared rating, the remaster offers updated dialogue and numerous improvements to gameplay quality compared to the 2006 version.

The updated version of Oblivion, titled Oblivion Remastered, has been released on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S. It’s also available for subscribers of Game Pass on both Xbox and PC platforms. Even though Bethesda doesn’t endorse modding the remastered version, there are ways to customize the game, and the modding community is becoming increasingly active.
