In a subtle nod to a significant location in the Star Wars universe, Andor Season 2 revisited Yavin 4, which you might not have noticed.
At the start of Andor’s second series, Cassian manages to flee an Imperial base in a TIE fighter and eventually touch down on an unidentified forested planet to encounter a person known as Porko. Unlike familiar landscapes such as Tatooine or Mustafar, it is teeming with vegetation and trees, and everywhere he listens, he can hear the sounds of wildlife.
A band of rebels from the Maya Pei Brigade encounter him, these being the very ones who murdered Porko following his aggressive behavior and destruction of their vessel. Their situation is dire as they’re on the brink of famine, with the TIE fighter potentially being their escape route off the planet. However, only Cassian has piloting skills, and there’s a question mark over whether he can be trusted as one of them, given his unknown allegiance.
Eventually, Cassian successfully returns to the spaceship and departs aloft. As he ascends towards the heavens, it is revealed that our location has been Yavin 4 all along.
What is Yavin 4?
Yavin 4, often simply referred to as Yavin, is a lush satellite that revolves around its primary planet, Yavin Prime. Over time, this jungle moon serves as the headquarters for the Rebel Alliance.
Prior to the Destruction of the Death Star (as depicted in A New Hope), the Massassi, a once-enslaved race dominated by the Sith, built the Grand Temple. The Massassi later became extinct, but the temple was rediscovered by the Alliance to Restore the Republic following their departure from Dantooine. During the Galactic Civil War, this temple served as their main headquarters.
Yavin has been featured across various Star Wars productions, such as A New Hope (the film in which Princess Leia awarded medals to Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Luke Skywalker), and Rogue One.
To learn more about the intricacies of Star Wars lore, delve further into the extended Legends universe. For instance, there’s a tale where the ghost of a fallen Jedi attempted to sway Luke Skywalker towards the dark side as he established a Jedi Academy on the moon.
How do we know it’s Yavin 4 in Andor Season 2?
While Cassian soars away in his TIE Fighter, he whizzes past what appears to be an recognizable pyramid structure – and many assume this is none other than the Great Temple on Yavin 4, thus making it its first canonical appearance within the Star Wars universe.
In an interview with Empire, showrunner Tony Gilroy hinted at this development, saying, “Well, we’ve got to get to Yavin, don’t we? So, we’re going to narrate the tale of Yavin. No one has approached Yavin quite like we plan to.
Diego Luna added: “We traverse through space more than before, with a wealth of planets and sets waiting to be discovered. Some locales will be recognizable, while others will be entirely new.
