The wait is over, and “Andor” is back in a galaxy far, far away.
A Star Wars Story.” This film sets up events leading to “A New Hope,” and it ends right before the famous opening text scrolls. The main character in this series is Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna, who’s a brave rebel spy with no qualms about getting his hands dirty.
In Season 1’s continuation, several key actors reprise their roles. Adria Arjona portrays Andor’s romantic interest Bix Caleen, Stellan Skarsgard takes on the character of the merciless spymaster Luthen Rael, Genevieve O’Reilly returns as Senator Mon Mothma, Kyle Soller reprises his role as Imperial agent Syril Karn, Denise Gough is back as the Imperial’s tenacious rebel hunter Dedra Meero, and more.
Towards the close of Season 1, Cassian manages to break free from an unjust Imperial prison and decides to actively participate in the rebellion against the Empire. He saves Bix, who had been subjected to torment by the Imperials, and accepts Luthen’s invitation to join their cause. They depart from their home on Ferrix, fleeing the relentless pursuit of the Imperials seeking Cassian and Luthen. It is disclosed that a covert project which Cassian and his cellmates were working on at Narkina 5 was none other than the Death Star – a colossal weapon capable of destroying planets, as seen in “A New Hope.” The prisoners had been constructing components for the Empire’s most formidable armament.
Instead of releasing one episode weekly like Season 1, Season 2 of “Andor” will offer three episodes each week, with each episode advancing one year in the “Star Wars” timeline. It’s been over two years since Season 1 wrapped up on Disney+, so let’s remind ourselves about the main characters in the show.
Cassian Andor (Diego Luna)
Cassian has now become a part of the Rebel Alliance and functions as one of Luthen’s secret agents. Following their daring escape from Narkina 5 prison, where they also saved Bix, they have moved onto a different planet, keeping clear of the watchful eyes of the Empire. The upcoming Season 2 will delve into Cassian’s activities during the early stages of “Rogue One,” when he initiated the rebel plan that ultimately resulted in the destruction of the Death Star.
Bix Caleen (Adria Arjona)
Bix is an old friend of Cassian’s, with a clear romantic interest between them. During Season 1, she was seized by Imperial forces, tortured, and eventually rescued by Cassian. The psychological wounds from her captivity linger as she becomes part of the rebellion.
Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgard)
Luthen is relentless in his pursuit of defeating the Empire. He boasts a team of spies, which includes Cassian, Vel, Cinta, and his assistant Kleya, at his service. Undercover as a high-end art shopkeeper, he adorns himself with wigs and elegant attire, hiding his true identity as a rugged rebel leader with a deep voice. As a capable pilot, Luthen assigns Cassian his initial mission and welcomes him into the rebellion once he’s confident in their bond of trust.
Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly)
In the galaxy’s grand tapestry, I made my debut in “Return of the Jedi,” portrayed by Caroline Blakiston initially. However, my character’s narrative blossomed in “Rogue One” and “Andor,” with Genevieve O’Reilly stepping into the role. I hail from the peaceful planet Chandrila, serving as a senator within the Galactic Republic. I stand resolute against aligning myself with Emperor Palpatine’s Imperial forces. In the first season of our ongoing tale, the bonds between my husband Perrin and me, as well as with my daughter Leida, have grown strained. This is due to my covert financial support to the rebellion movement. To guarantee funding for our cause, I entered into a questionable alliance with a businessman named Davo Sculdun, arranging for his son to wed Leida.
Dedra Meero (Denise Gough)
Dedra serves as an Imperial supervisor with a mission to track down Cassian and Luthen, whom she’s informally called Axis. She’s driven by her ambition and is willing to go to great lengths to climb the ranks by apprehending rebels. It was Dedra who issued orders for Bix’s interrogation to gain intel on Cassian. In a close call, she narrowly escaped death during the riot in Ferrix at the end of Season 1, but Syril managed to rescue her. Since she isn’t featured in “Rogue One,” it is likely that Season 2 will shed light on where she went before the events of that film.
Syril Karn (Kyle Soller)
Syril shares an equal intensity with Dedra in pursuing Cassian and gaining recognition from the Empire, but being of lower rank presents additional challenges for him. Their paths might intersect in their shared quest as rebels following Syril’s rescue of Dedra during the uprising at Ferrix. Additionally, Syril has an unusual dynamic with his domineering mother Eedy.
Vel Sartha (Faye Marsay)
Vel is Mon Mothma’s relative and functions as one of Luthen’s agents, contributing to Cassian’s success in the Aldhani heist during Season 1. Much like Mon, Vel hails from an affluent family but stands with the rebellion, working alongside her partner, Cinta, in their shared cause.
Cinta Kaz (Varada Sethu)
Cinta serves as Vel’s romantic partner and is additionally one of Luthen’s undercover agents. Her commitment to the rebellion often overshadows her personal relationships. She participated in the Aldhani heist and collaborated with Vel on Ferrix, where they were both assigned to monitor Cassian.
Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn)
In my latest cinematic adventure, I find myself once again stepping into the menacing boots of Director Orson Krennic, a high-ranking Imperial official straight out of “Rogue One.” Reporting directly to Emperor Palpatine and overseeing the Death Star’s construction, Krennic is no stranger to power and ambition.
As we saw in “Rogue One,” my character harbors a fierce rivalry with the infamous Grand Moff Tarkin. Unfortunately for me, it seems that Tarkin manages to outshine me, snatching all the credit for the Death Star’s creation and sending Krennic to meet his untimely end in the weapon’s test blast on Scariff. Quite a turn of events, I must say!
Kleya Marki (Elizabeth Dulau)
Kleya serves as Luthen’s aid within his antique store, yet behind the scenes, she actively participates in the uprising to the same extent as him. She maintains a covert connection with his web of informants.
Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker)
Following his initial appearance in “Rogue One” and reemergence in Season One of “Andor”, the unorthodox rebel leader Saw Gerrera, portrayed by Forest Whitaker, returns. Despite his strong commitment to the rebellion, his methods are considered explosive by many, earning him a reputation as an unpredictable wild card.
K-2SO (Alan Tudyk)
In the upcoming season of “Andor”, we’ll see the return of K-2SO, a tall, witty K2 droid voiced by Alan Tudyk. Originally an Imperial droid, K-2 has undergone reprogramming and played a role in “Rogue One”. This season will reveal K-2’s background and the story of how he meets Cassian.
Wilmon Paak (Muhannad Bhaier)
In the first season, we find Wilmon, or Wil as he’s often called, living on the planet Ferrix. However, when his father is captured and a riot ensues on Ferrix, Wil becomes keen to participate in the uprising. He steps into the limelight more significantly during Season 2 and aligns himself with the rebel movement.
Brasso (Joplin Sibtain)
Brasso, a salvage yard worker, is among Cassian’s most trusted friends, often providing an alibi when Imperial officers question him. As Season 1 concludes, he accompanies Cassian and Bix in their escape to a more secure planet for temporary refuge.
