The popular toy store chain, Toys ‘R’ Us, is set to reemerge in a different form – as a feature film. Currently, a motion picture inspired by the once-dominant retail company is being developed, with Story Kitchen involved in the project.
In collaboration with Story Kitchen and Toys ‘R’ Us Studios, plans are underway for a live-action film inspired by the iconic brand. At this point in development, no actors have been confirmed, and neither a screenwriter nor director has been appointed. The movie intends to evoke that magical sense of childhood in a contemporary, action-packed tale that leverages the Toys ‘R’ Us brand’s enduring appeal, spanning over 70 years in the toy business.
Speaking about the project, Story Kitchen co-founders Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg expressed, “Toys ‘R’ Us is an enduring symbol of our childhoods, still resonating with us today. As kids of the ’80s who viewed Toys ‘R’ Us as a magical wonderland, we feel privileged to collaborate on a film that will embody the essence of adventure, imagination, and nostalgia associated with Toys ‘R’ Us.
Kim Miller Olko, president of Toys ‘R’ Us Studios, stated, “Our brand’s first film presents an exhilarating chance to translate the magic of Toys ‘R’ Us onto the silver screen. This project will be a limitless voyage, mirroring the boundless excitement that defines play itself, and tapping into the captivating sense of wonder that is at the heart of Toys ‘R’ Us. The narrative will spark creativity, inspire adventure, and bring joy – qualities that have made Toys ‘R’ Us a beloved destination for children everywhere.
The Movie Gets Comparisons to Back to the Future
The plot details are yet to be revealed, but it’s been suggested that the film is similar in style to movies like “Night at the Museum”, “Back to the Future”, and “Big”. It seems to draw inspiration from popular toy-themed films such as “Jumanji” and “Barbie”. Olko will collaborate on the production with Toys ‘R’ Us Studios, along with Johnson, Goldberg, Timothy I. Stevenson, and Elena Sandoval from Story Kitchen.
