Bethesda has rolled out an unexpected treat for gamers! The remastered version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is now available on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. If you’re interested in this game (and you can with a Game Pass subscription), go ahead and grab it immediately. However, there’s a catch – the game has been rebuilt using Unreal Engine 5, which is known for producing visually stunning games but can sometimes be demanding and cause technical issues for players due to various reasons. In the case of Oblivion, some users have reported crashes.
Oblivion Remastered crashing on launch and during shaders compilation
An unblemished game launch is a scarce (or perhaps even mythical) occurrence these days. Unfortunately, quite a few players encountered issues today when attempting to play Oblivion Remastered, as it often triggers headaches. As I mentioned previously, the game fails to load for some users at startup. This problem tends to arise at two key moments – upon launch and during shader compilation. Fortunately, there are resolutions available for this predicament.
First of all, you should try some simple solutions.
- Update drivers.
- Verify files.
- Run the game as administrator (use the exe file in the game directory, not launcher).
Moreover, one user shared an uncomplicated approach for the game on a Steam forum. However, be aware that this method involves altering the game’s files. Consequently, proceed with caution and ensure you have backed up your original files first.
- Open the folder: Steam \ steamapps \ common \ Oblivion Remastered \ Engine \ Plugins \ Marketplace \ nvidia \ DLSS \ Streamline \ Binaries \ ThirdParty \ Win64 (of course, without spaces)
- Delete or rename file called: sl.pcl.dll
The issue we’re facing might still be rooted within your personal computer. If it happens to have an Intel processor from the 13th or 14th generation, that could very well be the cause. UE5 productions tend to experience difficulties with such hardware, but it’s not the game at fault – it’s the processors themselves. This is a recognized problem, even acknowledged by Intel. To address this, you might want to consider updating your computer’s BIOS.
In another instance, I encountered a crash myself. Specifically, when I tried switching upscaling technologies within the settings of Oblivion Remastered, an error message popped up. Despite this, the game didn’t fully close and needed to be forcefully ended using the task manager. Upon restarting, the game resumed without any significant issues.
