Although losing its initial two spin-offs, FBI: International and FBI: Most Wanted, in 2025, CBS’ G-Men franchise is expanding due to the upcoming debut of a new spin-off originally named FBI: CIA. While some fans questioned its necessity considering the existing series, there seems to be a strong confidence about the innovative concept among those involved. Two significant updates have been confirmed, ensuring the spinoff’s continuation in the future.
CBS Officially Orders FBI’s CIA Spinoff To Series
It seems the decision-makers at CBS have made a significant move by greenlighting the new project directly for a full season. According to Deadline, this means the drama spin-off will officially debut alongside the original series during the autumn television lineup of 2025.
As a film enthusiast, I must admit that the details about the number of episodes and potential continuation of this upcoming series remain somewhat elusive at the moment. However, what we do have is a tantalizing hint that CBS might be considering a significant title change, possibly stripping away the “FBI” connective tissue to simply title the new drama as “CIA”.
The upcoming series is masterminded by David Hudgins (known for FBI: Most Wanted), Nicole Perlman (renowned for Guardians of the Galaxy), and a former CIA operative, David Chasteen. This production will delve into the story of two partners whose personalities clash, one being a reckless, rule-bending CIA officer and the other a disciplined, by-the-book FBI agent. They are tasked to operate from the CIA’s New York Station, where they must navigate their disparities to neutralize or prevent serious menaces.
Originally, the CIA intended to integrate the new project within the FBI as a secret trial run, featuring three key characters who would be gradually introduced into one of the ongoing episodes. However, this plan faced some delays and adjustments because of casting issues, and eventually, they decided against the backdoor pilot approach, opting instead for a direct commission.
Lucifer Vet Tom Ellis Cast As FBI’s CIA Spinoff Lead
The delay in casting for the new show’s dual protagonist, particularly the CIA officer character, has come to an end. In this role, Tom Ellis – widely recognized for his portrayal of the devil over six seasons on Lucifer (a series that reworked its finale and moved to Netflix following Fox canceling it after three seasons) – will be cast by Dick Wolf’s production team.
Ellis is set to play the more flexible character within the duo, often characterized as a swift-speaking, unpredictable individual. These traits seem fitting for him without asking too much of his acting abilities. Moreover, add a dash of “arrogant sarcasm” and you’ve got a cop who’s strikingly similar to Lucifer Morningstar in a uniform.
It’s worth noting that starting around February, Tom Ellis appeared in CIA casting reports. However, these seem to have faded after a month or so of discussions. It appears that some behind-the-scenes development, favorable enough, must have occurred to persuade Ellis to join the project. Once he was officially involved, CBS reportedly became more enthusiastic about finalizing the series arrangement details.
Keep an eye out for further updates on the cast of the upcoming CIA spinoff, where we’ll find out who will be keeping Tom Ellis in check as his show premieres on CBS this autumn.
