TV shows featuring LGBTQ+ themes, regardless of their charm or popularity, often share a common outcome: they are canceled and given a movie conclusion. This seems to be the case with HBO’s “Looking” and more recently, Netflix’s “Heartstopper,” two prominent series in the era following the Obergefell decision. Netflix officially announced on April 22 that “Heartstopper,” the teenage romantic drama which catapulted Kit Connor and Joe Locke to fame, will not continue for a fourth season but instead conclude with a movie. This means that the series will end in the same way as its older counterpart, which wrapped up in a 2016 television film. “I am absolutely thrilled that we will get to tell the conclusion of the ‘Heartstopper’ story,” creator Alice Oseman stated. “I’m so grateful to everyone who has worked tirelessly to make this happen and to the passionate fans of ‘Heartstopper’ for your understanding and enthusiasm.
In the upcoming movie, Oseman is penning the script based on her sixth “Heartstopper” graphic novel. Original stars Connor and Locke are set to reprise their roles, while Wash Westmoreland (“Still Alice”) takes on directing duties. The production is slated for this summer, but a release date remains unannounced. It might explore themes similar to “Looking”, perhaps featuring a character who opens a peri-peri restaurant.
