Ayo Edebiri and Will Sharpe to Lead Rom-Com Series ‘Prodigies’ for Apple TV+

Will Sharpe and Ayo Edebiri are set to unite in the new rom-com series “Prodigies” for Apple TV+.

Creator Sam Sharpe, well-known for “The White Lotus” and recently spotted guiding Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin around Poland in the series “A Real Pain,” is set to write and direct a new seven-episode comedy. The production company behind the BAFTA-winning show “Black Doves,” Sister, will be handling production duties. Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG Award winner Rashida Edebiri, who excelled in “The Bear,” will also take on an executive producer role alongside Sharpe.

In a fresh twist on traditional romantic comedies, the film “Prodigies” delves into the intricate challenges faced in long-term relationships, viewed through the perspective of an extraordinary couple – Didi (Edebiri) and Ren (Sharpe), who were once child prodigies and have been together since their youth. Now in their early 30s, they begin to ponder if their ordinary lives match the extraordinary potential that defined their childhood. As the story unfolds, they grapple with similar doubts about their relationship.

The series explores how personal aspirations and requirements can clash with communal existence, contradicting the common trope in love stories that the story ends once the protagonists are united. Instead, it suggests, isn’t that moment when their journey truly begins in real life?

Jane Featherstone, Naomi de Pear, and Katie Carpenter will also serve as executive producers for the series, under the banner of Sister.

Since gaining international fame with his role in the second season of “The White Lotus,” Harry Sharpe has been a figure behind the camera, starting with his directorial debut in the 2011 feature film “Black Pond.” He is known for creating, writing, and directing the BAFTA-winning dark comedy-drama series “Flowers,” which aired on BBC from 2016 to 2018 and starred Olivia Colman. In 2021, he collaborated with Colman once more on the HBO/Sky crime series “Landscapers,” where he also served as writer and director. That same year saw the release of his final feature film as a writer/director, titled “The Electrical Life of Louis Wain,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch. In 2020, Sharpe was recognized with a BAFTA TV Award for best supporting actor in “Giri/Haji.
