Jon Landau’s ‘Avatar’ & ‘Titanic’ Memoir Cover Revealed!

On November 4th, Disney Publishing will release the cover art for the memoir penned by Jon Landau, an Academy Award-winning producer known for “Titanic” and the “Avatar” series, which he wrote before his passing.

Entitled “The Grand Scheme: My Blockbuster Life & Lessons Gleaned Throughout the Journey,” this book is portrayed by the publisher as an inspiring and amusing account offering a glimpse behind the scenes of a life in cinema, emphasizing the delight found in overcoming challenges with elegance, kindness, and generosity. Hyperion also describes it as a heartfelt homage to storytelling in its various manifestations, and a jubilant portrayal of a life well spent, narrated from the final chapter. This memoir is enriched with Landau’s distinctive empathy, humanity, and humor.

For several decades, James Cameron had Jon Landau as his film-making partner. It was Landau who penned the foreword for Cameron’s memoir. In 1997, the movie “Titanic,” directed by Cameron, became the first film to surpass $1 billion at the global box office. Later on, they exceeded this record with “Avatar” in 2009 and “Avatar: The Way of Water” in 2022. Before his passing last July at the age of 63, Landau was busy producing the sequels to “Avatar,” including “Avatar: Fire & Ash,” which is set for release on December 19.

Julie Landau, who’s been married to the producer for nearly 40 years and is the mother of their two children, explained the origin of the book. “Being a natural storyteller,” said Julie, “Jon wanted to tell, in his own voice, the incredible journey that was his life. His initial idea came about after receiving a cancer diagnosis, and over the next year, he documented his life story on video. Initially, it was meant for the boys, me, our entire family. But as he started narrating his life and work, he discovered he wanted to share his story and the lessons he’d gathered during his journey, with a wider audience, hoping they might find something valuable in it.

The memoir’s cover will display a black-and-white image of Landau, accompanied by some striking and vibrant scenes from “Titanic,” “Avatar,” and “Avatar: The Way of Water” – three of the top four highest-earning films in history. One of these images is a famous snapshot of Jack and Rose (played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet) on the Titanic’s bow, where they shared their first kiss in the movie, only hours before the ship sank.

As per Hyperion’s description, Landau recounts personal anecdotes from behind the scenes of some iconic movies, offering guidance on maintaining a balanced life while working in a demanding profession. He emphasizes the importance of family love and friendship in his own life, making his story yet another successful cinematic tale.
