Tom Hanks Returns to Toy Story 5: First Day of Recording!

Ever since Disney and Pixar introduced us to the world of Toy Story back in 1995, this franchise has been a blockbuster sensation, raking in over $3.3 million at the box office. Now, we’re eagerly awaiting the fifth installment, Toy Story 5, which serves as a sequel to the heartwarming Toy Story 4 from 2019. As per Disney CEO Bob Iger, production is underway. And here’s some exciting news for fellow cinema enthusiasts like me – one of the film’s beloved leads, Tom Hanks, has already started recording his scenes! In Toy Story 5, he will once again bring to life our favorite cowboy, Woody. Can’t wait to see what adventures await this iconic character!

On April 21st, Hanks shared a photo on social media. It showed him in a studio, with only his hand visible and five fingers extended, next to a microphone and what seemed like a script. He wrote the following caption: “Starting work on Project Number 5! Any guesses? Clue: Disney, Studio B.

What is Toy Story 5 About?

In the fifth installment of the beloved franchise, Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 5,” we find our favorite toys once again in action. However, this time around, it’s a different story as Toy meets Tech. The challenges faced by Buzz, Woody, Jessie, and their friends become even more daunting when they encounter an entirely new peril to playtime, setting the stage for an exciting showdown.

Tim Allen Has Already Been in the Studio

In December 2024, Tim Allen, the longtime voice of Buzz Lightyear in the movie series, shared news about the upcoming film with fans. During this update, he revealed that he had already spent some time in the recording studio. To be more specific, he mentioned that he recently completed a five-hour session for Buzz, which was approximately a week prior to his statement. Additionally, he hinted that the script for the fifth movie is now available.

Combat Carl Will Return

Information emerged that Tom Hanks has started recording for Toy Story 5, coincidentally around the same time as we learned that Combat Carl, a toy inspired by G.I. Joe characters, was voiced by Carl Weathers – the Rocky series actor who tragically passed away in February 2024 at the age of 76.

It’s been announced that Combat Carl will reappear in Toy Story 5, but this time he will be given voice by Ernie Hudson, who is famously recognized as Winston Zeddemore from the Ghostbusters franchise.

Pixar Chief Teases a New Direction for Toy Story 5

In March, Pete Docter, who serves as Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer, stated that future films would have a quicker tempo compared to their predecessors. “I believe movies are moving at a faster pace now, from Toy Story 1 to Toy Story 4, the visual intricacy and pacing have significantly increased,” Docter explained, emphasizing that they aim to stay attuned to the speed of contemporary life.

In simpler terms, “Andrew Stanton has skillfully allowed the moments in Toy Story 5 to unfold in unique and thought-provoking ways. Some scenes might make you question if this is still a Toy Story movie, which I believe is crucial at this stage given that we’ve had four previous installments. It’s important to keep audiences surprised, so it promises to be an enjoyable experience,” said Docter.

The fifth installment of Toy Story, titled Toy Story 5, is scheduled to hit theaters on June 19, 2026. Currently, you can stream the Toy Story series on Disney+.
