Dubai chocolate TikTok trend causes international pistachio shortage

As a passionate gamer, I’ve been keeping up with the latest trends on TikTok and let me tell you, the Dubai Chocolate craze is real! However, it seems like this sweet sensation has caused a global shortage of one of its key ingredients. Can’t wait to see how this unfolds!

2023 rolled around and this tantalizing dessert, initially exclusive to Dubai, started trending like wildfire on TikTok! Turns out, it’s a delightful blend of tahini, flaky kataifi pastry, and pistachio cream that gives it its eye-catching green hue. I just can’t get enough of it!

Initially, the unique candy dominated the app, yet American brands soon found methods to distribute it. It didn’t take much time for Costco to start selling Dubai Chocolate, and numerous TikTok retail shops started offering both bars and DIY kits.

Initially, the popularity surge began when Maria Vehara shared a video of her eating the popular chocolate, which she directly bought from its originator, Fix Dessert Chocolatier.

Because it’s highly sought after, there apparently has been a significant lack of availability for one of its key components, as a result.

Since then, it has predominantly been sold as whole nuts, not the kernel components used in the viral Dubai Chocolate recipe.

Or,

The main way this product was distributed for sale was as whole nuts, instead of the kernel pieces used in the widely-shared Dubai Chocolate recipe.

According to The Guardian, due to the scarcity, certain retailers have implemented restrictions on the quantity of bars that can be purchased at once, ensuring fair access for all consumers seeking the popular viral chocolate.

Back in August of 2024, I wasn’t surprised when yet another viral TikTok food trend led to a nationwide shortage. Remember the ‘Cucumber guy’, Logan? He took over the app with his cucumber salad videos and left us all scrambling for cucumbers!

In just a few short days, it was found that Iceland’s supermarkets were running out of cucumbers because countless individuals were flocking in to stock up on components for the popular cucumber salad.
