Attention! This recap discloses plot points from Dark Winds season 3, episode 7, so proceed with caution if you haven’t seen it yet. In a surprising twist, the penultimate episode of season 3 of Dark Winds unveiled that we had been misled about crucial aspects of both Bernadette Manuelito’s (Jessica Matten) and Joe Leaphorn’s (Zahn McClarnon) investigations throughout the series. The latest installment, episode 7, brought substantial advancements for Bernadette’s probe into Tom Spenser’s (Bruce Greenwood) trafficking network, as well as the joint efforts by Leaphorn and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) to unmask Ernesto Cata’s murderer. After weeks of diligent investigation, all three made substantial progress in bringing justice to their victims.
In the seventh episode of season 3 in the series “Dark Winds”, many surprises unfolded, yet not precisely what viewers anticipated. For example, Dr. Reynolds (Christopher Heyerdahl) was unveiled as the Ye’iitsoh within “Dark Winds”, and Leaphorn deduced how and why he murdered Ernesto and is pursuing George Bowlegs. Similarly, Bernadette deciphered the significance of the pig drawing in “Dark Winds”, but she also unearthed that Spenser isn’t merely smuggling drugs; he’s also involved in human trafficking as anticipated all along. These were significant revelations, yet there were two other plot twists used throughout the season by “Dark Winds” that took everyone by surprise.
Dark Winds Season 3, Episode 7 Revealed The Cases Aren’t Connected At All
Ernesto Cata’s Murder Has Nothing To Do With Tom Spenser’s Trafficking Ring
In the heart of Dark Winds season 3, episode 7, what truly left me stunned was the underlying structure of the entire season unfolding before my eyes. As Leaphorn and Chee unraveled the truth about Reynolds being the Ye’iitsoh, they inadvertently hinted that his heinous act against Ernesto Cata had no connection whatsoever to Bernadette’s case. It seemed Reynolds was working alone, as we learned he was ‘seeding’ his archaeological site with artifacts, which led to Ernesto’s demise. Tom Spenser’s human trafficking ring appeared to be detached from Leaphorn and Chee’s investigation, just as Bernadette’s case remained unrelated to theirs.
In essence, Halsey (Phil Burke) and the enigmatic farmers served as the common link between Leaphorn, Chee’s investigation, and Bernadette’s storyline. However, it was later established that Halsey had no involvement in Ernesto’s demise, making him innocent, and the farmers turned out to be a significant distraction or misleading clue. It seemed as though Chee’s journey to New Mexico primarily served as an opportunity for him to nurture his budding relationship with Bernadette, which appeared to have minimal impact on his investigation. Contrary to viewers’ expectations, the series never intended for Leaphorn and Chee to collaborate directly with Bernadette in any way, as evidenced by the conclusion of Dark Winds season 3.
Both Ivan And Garza Are Working For Tom Spenser In Dark Winds Season 3
Bernadette Had No One She Could Trust In New Mexico After All
In the seventh episode of season 3 of Dark Winds, an unexpected twist emerged from Bernadette’s narrative. While we were aware that Ivan Muños (Alex Meraz) was a corrupt cop for several episodes, it was in this episode that we learned that Eleanda Garza (Tonantzin Carmelo) was also on Tom Spenser’s payroll. This revelation might have left viewers questioning who Bernadette could rely on at the Border Patrol, and it may have been easy to overlook the possibility that there was no one she could depend on in New Mexico. The revelation of Ivan as a villain also led us to believe that Bernadette had exposed all the cops on Spenser’s payroll, creating a false sense of security.
Dark Winds Has Been Clever With Its Misdirection All Season
Dark Winds Season 3 Flipped Traditional Crime Thriller Twists & Its Own History On Its Head
In the realm of crime thrillers, unexpected twists are common, yet Dark Winds still managed to deliver some genuinely startling revelations in a clever manner. Despite viewers having certain expectations for surprises, the cases being unrelated and both Ivan and Eleanda being on Spenser’s payroll were not the shockers many of us had envisioned. Dark Winds achieved this by challenging the norms of the police procedural genre and the series itself. It’s no simple task to create genuine surprise in a genre as densely populated as the police procedural, but Dark Winds executed some skillful maneuvers to make its misdirections effective.

It’s reasonable that many viewers anticipated Ivan as the antagonist, given betrayals are frequent in mystery stories. Yet, very few would have guessed _both_ Bernadette’s friends in New Mexico were corrupt police officers. Similarly, many Dark Winds viewers assumed the cases would be connected in a predictable manner, much like Chee’s investigation in Dark Winds season 2 conveniently reunited him with Leaphorn. By capitalizing on the audience’s expectations of typical plot twists found in crime thrillers such as Dark Winds, it was able to create genuinely shocking surprises.
