In the debut episode of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” Captain Benjamin Sisko, portrayed by Avery Brooks, encountered an unresolved issue with Captain Jean-Luc Picard, played by Patrick Stewart, which has yet to be addressed. To entice viewers of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” to watch “DS9,” the new series initially created several links to its predecessor. One such connection was the introduction of Chief Miles O’Brien, played by Colm Meany, who became a regular cast member, managing and maintaining the dilapidated facilities on Space Station Deep Space Nine.

Captain Picard made a cameo appearance in the debut of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” titled “The Emissary.” This felt like a nod of approval towards the new series. However, Commander Sisko wasn’t overly thrilled. The episode starts with a flashback to the Battle of Wolf 359, where Picard was briefly assimilated as Locutus of Borg. Interestingly, it is revealed that Sisko himself was stationed at Wolf 359 during the battle, serving on the USS Saratoga. Tragically, his wife, Jennifer (played by Felecia M. Bell), perished in the conflict, leaving him to flee the Saratoga with their son, Jake (Cirroc Lofton).

Sisko Harbored A Lot Of Anger About Picard’s Role In The Battle Of Wolf 359

In retrospect, Commander Sisko continued to hold Captain Picard accountable for Jennifer’s demise, recalling him more as Locutus of Borg. To Sisko, it was Picard’s likeness that appeared on the Saratoga’s viewscreen, issuing the chilling phrase, “Resistance is futile,” followed by a hailstorm of destruction upon a constellation of starships. The series Star Trek: The Next Generation depicted the events leading to the Battle of Wolf 359 from both Picard’s and the Enterprise-D crew’s perspectives, leaving an indelible mark on Jean-Luc. While the incident was deeply distressing for Picard, Sisko’s resentment is also comprehensible.

In their initial encounter, Sisko informs Picard about his participation in the Battle of Wolf 359. A moment of silence follows before Picard proceeds with explaining Sisko’s assignment at Deep Space Nine. Interestingly, in one of Captain Sisko’s last scenes on the station, Picard departs after a handshake, seemingly improving their relationship. However, they never delve into the Borg, the horrific battle, or Picard’s involvement during this conversation. Such a discussion would have been intriguing, but unfortunately, Picard and Sisko did not cross paths again onscreen.

Sisko & Picard Both Moved On From Their Borg Trauma, But Never Saw Each Other Again

It Took Picard Decades To Move On From His Experience As Locutus

A significant portion of Jean-Luc Picard’s tale post-“Star Trek: The Next Generation” has been shaped by the lingering effects of his time as Locutus. Although “TNG” seemed to move past this event swiftly, the harrowing scene in “The Best of Both Worlds” left a lasting impact on Picard throughout his life. In “Star Trek: First Contact,” we see Picard grappling with his fear and loathing towards the Borg, but it wasn’t until season 3 of “Star Trek: Picard” that he was able to confront and ultimately resolve (mostly) his issues with the Borg, thanks in part to the support of his crew from the Enterprise-D.

In my perspective as a movie reviewer, I must say that “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” offers an intriguing journey for its protagonist, Commander Benjamin Sisko. After the harrowing Battle of Wolf 359 and the tragic loss of his wife, he was on the brink of leaving Starfleet entirely. However, fate had other plans, and he found himself stationed at Terok Nor, a former Cardassian space station orbiting Bajor.

The turning point came when the Bajoran wormhole was discovered. This extraordinary event gave Sisko a renewed sense of purpose, as he became the Emissary of the Prophets. This role allowed him to grapple with his grief and ultimately find solace in his position as commander of DS9.

Thankfully, Sisko’s encounters with the Borg were in the past, but he found a new family among the crew of this space station. Through trials and tribulations, Sisko’s character evolves, making “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” a compelling series that delves deep into the human condition.

Picard Season 3 Had Another Captain Face Jean-Luc Over His Borg Trauma

Captain Shaw’s Speech Is A Highlight Of Picard’s Excellent Third Season

In Star Trek: Picard season 3, Captain Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick) of the USS Titan wasn’t just like Captain Sisko in terms of their shared Starfleet status, but also in having traumatic memories from the Battle of Wolf 359. In a holodeck simulation of 10 Forward Avenue’s bar, Captain Shaw confronted Picard directly, expressing sentiments that Captain Sisko might have wished to voice. Shaw narrated his personal account, highlighting how Picard was “blazing up the Borg cube” during the battle.

In a different phrasing, Todd Stashwick conveys Captain Shaw’s lingering turmoil, as he continues to grapple with a powerful memory decades later, finding it difficult to distinguish between Locutus and Picard. Shaw concludes his speech forcefully, stating that “Locutus was the only Borg they gave a name, so deadly.” This statement undoubtedly affects Picard, given his own traumatic recollections of the day. Eventually, Jean-Luc rescues Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) from a similar predicament, allowing him to face and overcome his past – an aspect of Captain Sisko’s character that we didn’t get to explore much in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
