GKIDS Boards Kenji Iwaisawa’s Animated Feature ‘100 Meters’ as Producing Partner and North American Distributor (EXCLUSIVE)

Indie company GKIDS is now working alongside director Kenji Iwaisawa on his upcoming animated film “100 Meters” (originally titled “Hyakuemu”), taking on the roles of production partner and North American distributor for this project.

The manga titled “100 Meters,” penned by Uoto, the writer of “Orb: On the Movements of the Earth” which has also received a recent anime adaptation, was initially unveiled before its development stage at last year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

After its September 19th premiere in Japan, GKIDS plans to screen “100 Meters” in cinemas across North America this October, featuring both the original Japanese dialogue and a newly produced English dub. Known for their 13 Oscar-nominated animated features, including the Academy Award-winning “The Boy and the Heron” and the entire Studio Ghibli collection, GKIDS serves as the North American distributor for these films.

Over 100 meters of track is where we find Togashi, an innately talented sprinter. In his sixth year at school, he encounters Komiya, a transfer student brimming with determination but lacking finesse. As a mentor, Togashi instills in Komiya a resolute goal: to triumph regardless of the odds. With the passage of time, Togashi and Komiya cross paths once more, this time as competitive opponents on the track, revealing their hidden potentials.

Presently, studio Rock’n Roll Mountain is busy with the production of Iwaisawa. Joining him are character designer and executive animation director Keisuke Kojima, as well as art director Keikankun Yamaguchi. The screenplay is penned by Yasuyuki Muto, renowned for “Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway” and “Tokyo Revengers”. The music score is crafted by Hiroaki Tsutsumi, known for “Jujutsu Kaisen”, “Tokyo Revengers” and “Dr. Stone”. Apart from GKIDS, the project is also being developed by Pony Canyon, Tokyo Broadcasting System and Asmik Ace.

Iwaisawa gained recognition following the release of his 2019 debut movie, “ON-GAKU: Our Sound.” This indie production was unique, featuring over 40,000 hand-drawn frames and employing a rotoscoping animation technique. GKIDS handled distribution in North America, where the film earned a nomination for Best Independent Animated Feature at the Annie Awards.

Thrilled to collaborate with GKIDS again, I’m eager to share the captivating ‘100 Meters’ with a global audience,” I express as a film enthusiast. “I believe this movie, which delves into the intense world of men striving for supreme speed, has the potential to strike a chord worldwide. Prepare for an exceptional cinematic journey!

David Jesteadt, president of GKIDS and also a producer on the film, states, “Director Iwaisawa has demonstrated yet again that sports are an excellent way to explore and comprehend human nature. Even in a seemingly straightforward 100-meter race, a broad spectrum of human emotions unfolds. I’m excited to bring this fresh take on a sports classic to audiences soon.
