Warner Bros. executive, Jesse Ehrman, spoke about a potential Minecraft film, admitting that he hadn’t anticipated the popularity of the “chicken jockeys” character, and yet, considering the success, it would be foolish for them not to consider a sequel.
In conversation with the Financial Times, Ehrman admitted, “Honestly, I couldn’t have predicted ‘chicken jockey’ would become a reality, but it was a topic we discussed.
The executive stated: “It’s difficult to predict or explain the unique actions that arise in a system (often referred to as ’emergent behavior’) and the elements that resonate with people. Our goal is simply to produce a film that seems enjoyable and genuine, reflecting how people interact with the game. If we stay committed to this approach, these desirable outcomes will naturally occur.
What even is a Chicken Jockey?
In the world of Minecraft legend, a “chicken jockey” denotes an unusual scenario where a young zombie hops onto a chicken for a ride. This occurrence is quite uncommon within the Minecraft universe.
The film adaptation of Minecraft is brimming with nods and tributes to the game itself, and a specific scene in it caused quite an uproar among fans. During the “chicken jockey” sequence in A Minecraft Movie, some spectators got so excited that they threw popcorn and leaped about, leading certain cinemas to caution patrons about considering fellow audience members. In one instance, a moviegoer even brought a genuine, live chicken to the theater!
In simpler terms, Director Jared Hess commented on the intense enthusiasm for a potential Minecraft film, stating that it was strange when enjoyment escalated to a level requiring police intervention, as he expressed to Entertainment Weekly.
The director chuckled at the situation, commenting that it was amusing how a simple act of cheering and tossing popcorn led to the police being called. He found it utterly hilarious, having seen many similar funny incidents. He particularly enjoyed instances where people stood on each other’s shoulders, cheered loudly, and celebrated together during those spontaneous moments.
Back in 2017, the creator of Minecraft, Jens Bergensten, described a chicken jockey as a zombie who hops on a chicken’s back. He mentioned that this character was partially conceived as a fun, humorous concept.
Bergensten stated that the zombies in the game are quite frightening due to their extreme aggression. He mentioned that there was a significant issue when these zombies would continuously spawn and despawn, but unlike them, the chickens always remain. This led to a period where the caves were becoming overrun with chickens.
A Sequel Seems Like A Sure Thing
In addition, during the interview, Ehrman indicated that fans might anticipate a continuation of the Minecraft film saga – a second movie. Previously, rumors about a possible sequel had surfaced, and now Ehrman has added his voice to these whispers.
He expressed that it would be unwise not to, considering the desire of the fans for more. Here’s hoping we can come up with a solution.
News has emerged that Warner Bros. is near to sealing agreements for a follow-up, which seems logical given that a Minecraft Film has amassed over $700 million globally. Currently, it ranks as the second highest-grossing video game movie behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and only 140 films in cinema history have earned more than A Minecraft Movie.
