In comedies, actors often have to lay down their pride to make a joke work. For instance, in Will Forte’s 2010 SNL-produced comedy “MacGruber”, there are many instances where he sacrifices his dignity for the sake of humor – like the celery distraction scene that has stuck in many viewers’ memories. However, in a film filled with absurd scenes and off-color jokes, there was one joke that the late [Actor’s Name], who played the villain Dieter Von Cunth, refused to perform.
During a recent chat on “The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast”, MacGruber’s director, Jorma Taccone, reminisced about filming the movie and where the Top Gun actor ultimately set his boundaries regarding stunts and comedic acts.
One humorous remark, however, he declined to enact. The idea of removing his own penis and inserting it back into his mouth was a jest that he was unwilling to perform. This was the one gag he refused to carry out.
Seth Meyers chimed in and applauded the intense method actor’s caution:
In my opinion, the choice he made at this time was particularly wise. It would undoubtedly be more challenging to discuss him now if you had put that unfortunate individual in such a difficult situation.
The movie revolves around MacGruber, a former special ops agent who gave up a life of violence after losing his fiancée. However, when his arch-enemy Dieter Von Cunth acquires a nuclear weapon, MacGruber is forced to return from retirement and gather a team to defeat Cunth and prevent the destruction of Washington D.C.
Val Kilmer‘s Unsung Comedic Chops
Val Kilmer is renowned for delivering powerful and mesmerizing performances in dramatic roles, yet he also excelled in comedy, demonstrating a remarkable versatility. Many top lists of Kilmer’s films feature his role in the Zucker brothers’ hilarious film, “Top Secret,” as well as his scene-stealing act in Shane Black’s “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.” Despite Kilmer’s deep immersion into dramatic characters, his playful spirit and daring acting choices set his comedic performances apart.
Additionally, Taccone mentioned that he was awestruck by Kilmer during the movie’s table reading. Moreover, he shared that Kilmer perfectly embodied the role.
Afterwards, he confessed to us that he performed it without prior warm-up. Remarkably, he delivered the role flawlessly, as if he had mastered it perfectly.
It was astonishing, really, considering we were all such avid fans. For me, Top Secret was the first film that had me laughing nearly non-stop from start to finish. I can’t recall my exact age at the time, but it left me thinking, ‘Adults could be this hilarious?’ It was truly unexpected.
At the moment, you can’t stream MacGruber on any platform, but it’s available for rental or purchase on Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video. Tragically, Val Kilmer passed away from pneumonia on April 1, 2025, in Los Angeles at the age of 65.
