Yellowstone Movie on Netflix: Not What You Think!

Instead of finding a Yellowstone continuation on Netflix, viewers may be taken aback as the upcoming Yellowstone film deviates significantly from the Taylor Sheridan universe.

In the gaming world of television, I’ve got to say, Yellowstone stands out as one of the most captivating shows from the past ten years. The genius of creator Taylor Sheridan and the undeniable talent of Kevin Costner have propelled this Paramount series into a true ratings juggernaut.

2018 saw the debut of this show, which recently wrapped up following a run of five seasons and 53 episodes. However, the tale isn’t over yet, as spin-offs like 1883, 1923, and The Madison are in the works.

On Thursday, April 24, 2025, a new movie titled “Yellowstone” will debut on Netflix in the U.S., however it should be noted that this movie is not related to the TV series of the same name.

Murder at Yellowstone City has nothing to do with Taylor Sheridan

The movie is called Murder at Yellowstone City, and released in cinemas and on VOD in June of 2022.

In the director’s chair was Richard Gray, who worked with a screenplay penned by Eric Belgau. The talented ensemble for this production includes Gabriel Byrne, Thomas Jane, Isaiah Mustafa, Anna Camp, Nat Wolff, and Richard Dreyfuss.

In simpler terms, the story revolves around a peacefully liberated ex-slave who is falsely accused of murder. An optimistic minister takes it upon himself to find evidence pointing towards the culprit in this strife-torn community.

However, the feedback was far from positive, as Murder at Yellowstone City only earned a 25% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, following 20 critiques.

In their review, Variety praised the film, stating that the numerous gunfights and action sequences in the last part of “Murder at Yellowstone City” were not only thrilling but also convincingly portrayed.

However, The LA Times found it less appealing, commenting: “Murder at Yellowstone City, the western-mystery blend, leaves a talented cast adrift in a leisurely plot with a subdued atmosphere, overly distant from its sensational origins.

Feel free to form your own opinion about the non-Yellowstone Yellowstone movie once it premieres on Netflix on April 24. In the meantime, explore our compilation of top western movies throughout history, as well as the five films that Taylor Sheridan enthusiasts should not miss.
