Warning: This article contains spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again.
In the aftermath of the first season finale of “Daredevil: Born Again”, Marvel Studios now has an ideal moment to resurrect Matt Murdock’s primary romantic interest within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The series, “Born Again”, offered a compelling return to the MCU for Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock, who was first introduced in Netflix’s “Daredevil” series and subsequently made brief guest appearances throughout the MCU’s Multiverse Saga. “Born Again” delivered an intense storyline for the Man Without Fear, yet it also maintained a recurring motif from Daredevil’s MCU journey by introducing a fresh love interest.
In the series “Daredevil: Born Again,” we were introduced to Dr. Heather Glenn, a therapist and author based in New York, played by Margarita Levieva. She became Matt Murdock’s latest romantic interest. The relationship between them was turbulent, culminating in a dramatic finale titled “Straight to Hell.” Now, with Matt Murdock resuming his role as Daredevil, and Heather Glenn being brought into Mayor Wilson Fisk’s office, there’s an opportunity for a new (or rekindled) romantic interest to emerge in the second season of “Daredevil: Born Again.”
Matt Murdock Has Had Many Love Interests In The MCU, But Elektra Is Still His Best
Élodie Yung Played Elektra Natchios In Marvel Television’s Defenders Saga
Heather Glenn, a new romantic interest for Matt Murdock in the MCU, is expected to take on a villainous role in “Born Again” season 2, potentially causing turmoil for Daredevil. This isn’t the first time Matt Murdock has had a romantic entanglement with one of his adversaries, as this was also true for Élodie Yung’s Elektra Natchios in “Daredevil” season 2 and “The Defenders.” In fact, Elektra remains the most compelling love interest for Matt Murdock within the MCU.
Matt Murdock’s Love Interest | Actor | Debut Project |
---|---|---|
Elektra Natchios | Élodie Yung | Daredevil Season 2 (2016) |
Claire Temple | Rosario Dawson | Daredevil Season 1 (2015) |
Karen Page | Deborah Ann Woll | Daredevil Season 1 (2015) |
Jennifer Walters’ She-Hulk | Tatiana Maslany | She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022) |
Dr. Heather Glenn | Margarita Levieva | Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 (2025) |
For a number of years, there’s been chatter about Élodie Yung potentially reprising her role as Elektra Natchios in Marvel Studios projects, although no formal confirmation has been made. Élodie herself has expressed interest in returning to the role, and the new creative team behind “Daredevil: Born Again” have hinted that Elektra’s return is something they’ve considered. The dynamic between Charlie Cox and Élodie Yung was intense and captivating in their previous appearances together, making it exciting to imagine them sharing the screen again, possibly even bringing Elekta back from the dead, in “Daredevil: Born Again” season 2. The first season concluded with a clear opportunity for her return.
The Defenders Left The Door Open For Élodie Yung’s Elektra To Return
Elektra Natchios Might Have Died During The Defenders (But Maybe Not)
In the thrilling conclusion of 2016’s Daredevil season 2, the character Elektra Natchios met her apparent demise. However, she was miraculously brought back to life by the mysterious organization known as the Hand, who transformed her into their ultimate warrior, the Black Sky. A new and formidable Elektra then reappeared in the series The Defenders, confronting not only her ex-lover Matt Murdock but also his new allies, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Danny Rand’s Iron Fist. This led to a massive showdown between the Defenders and the Hand deep within Midland Circle’s underground caves. In the final battle, it seemed that both Daredevil and Elektra perished when the building collapsed.
It’s quite plausible that Elektra, much like Matt Murdock who survived the fall of Midland Circle, could have also made it through The Defenders’ finale, given her history in Marvel Comics of being killed and resurrected. Many superhero-focused productions adhere to the “no body, no death” rule, which makes it entirely possible that Élodie Yung will reprise her role as Elektra. With Daredevil: Born Again establishing an ideal narrative for her return, it wouldn’t be shocking at all.
Marvel Has Started A Wild Story That Includes Both Daredevil & Elektra In The Comics
Daredevil: Born Again’s Devil’s Reign Set-Up Teases Elektra’s Return
In the thrilling conclusion of “Daredevil: Born Again,” it effectively paved the way for Marvel Studios’ 2021 live-action adaptation of the “Devil’s Reign” comic book series. This storyline featured Mayor Wilson Fisk banning vigilantism in New York City, which had severe consequences for various heroes. The Kingpin’s creation of brutal Thunderbolts squads and manipulations of the mind-controlling Purple Man added to the chaos. Although this narrative will likely be adjusted to align with the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s timeline, the significant roles played by Daredevil and Elektra in this story suggest that there’s a strong possibility for Elektra to reappear in the future.
In the Marvel Comics storyline known as “Devil’s Reign”, Elektra confronted Wilson Fisk after the death of Matt Murdock’s twin brother, Mike, who was often mistaken for Matthew. Upon Daredevil’s return, he came close to killing Kingpin but was halted by Elektra, who inquired about the image he wished to project. This could hint at “Daredevil: Born Again” heading in that direction, and it would be thrilling to see Elektra Natchios rejoin Daredevil in season 2 of “Born Again”, delving into an intense and emotional narrative.
How Elektra’s Return Would Change Daredevil’s MCU Story Again
Elektra & Daredevil’s Marvel Comics Romance Is Iconic
Elektra Natchios is a cherished, potent, and significant secondary character in Daredevil’s universe within Marvel Comics. She has often served as an adversary, companion, and love interest for the Man Without Fear since her introduction in issue #168 of Daredevil in 1981. Given her substantial impact on Daredevil’s growth in the comics, it is crucial that she reappears in the MCU, particularly as the Defenders Saga only touched upon the iconic figure superficially.
Although Élodie Yung’s portrayal of Elektra did not have an opportunity to delve into some of her most compelling comic book storylines, Marvel can rectify this situation.
Bringing Elektra Natchios into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) once more would significantly boost Daredevil’s team in their battle against Kingpin, and it could lead to some gripping confrontations for Matt Murdock, Karen Page, Heather Glenn, and others. In Marvel Comics, Elektra even took up the role of the second Daredevil, which might make her Matt Murdock’s potential successor in the MCU if Charlie Cox’s Daredevil experiences a tragic end in “Daredevil: Born Again” season 2. With numerous opportunities for Elektra’s return to the MCU, let’s hope that we get to see her reappearance alongside Matt Murdock soon.
