You Won’t Believe What’s Coming in 1944: The Shocking Yellowstone Sequel

In 2022, the follow-up to the 1923 movie, titled 1944, is currently being developed, and there’s been a surprising amount of information disclosed about it that enthusiasts might not be aware of. This includes details on filming locations, possible cast members, and plot points.

1944 Has Been in the Works Since 2023

1944, similar to 1923 and 1883, was revealed as the next series in the franchise before Yellowstone concluded its run.

The fifth season of “Yellowstone,” which marked its final episode, debuted in late 2022. However, it took an exceptionally prolonged break spanning nearly all of 2023 and most of 2024, primarily due to several reasons such as the writers’ and actors’ strikes in Hollywood, along with off-set conflicts involving Kevin Costner and Taylor Sheridan.

During a pause in Season 5 of “Yellowstone,” it was officially revealed that “1944” is under development. As the title implies, it will indeed be set in 1944 and will serve as a continuation of both “1883” and “1923.

1944 was unveiled as the original title, and simultaneously, a follow-up series named 2024 was disclosed, marking the first sequel to the primary Yellowstone television show.

It’s quite possible that the series being referred to is “The Madison,” slated for release in 2025. This upcoming show promises to include familiar faces from “Yellowstone” as well as introducing new talent, such as Michelle Pfeiffer.

2026 is the anticipated year for the premiere of the yet-to-be-officially-dated film by Paramount, following the release of “The Madison”.

1923’s Brandon Sklenar & Michelle Randolph Would Love to Return

Information about the cast for the 1944 version hasn’t been disclosed yet, however, some of the main actors from the 1923 production have shown enthusiasm about revisiting their characters.

Given that the series is just 21 years post-1923, it’s quite plausible for certain characters to reappear, a development that makes perfect sense.

Among the potential cast members for the 1944 sequel, Brandon Sklenar, portraying Spencer Dutton in the original series of 1923, could reappear. As the finale of 1923 showed that Spencer survived for another 45 years beyond the events of the series, it’s confirmed that he would still be alive when the time of 1944 rolls around.

When queried by The Hollywood Reporter about the possibility of taking on the role of Spencer again, Sklenar expressed his desire by saying, “I’d really enjoy doing it.

Additionally, the actor hinted at his desire to come back by mentioning that he’s not ready to part ways with the character Spencer.

Absolutely! Let me help you with that. “Totally! I could use a bit of grit, a slight stoop, and a sprinkle of seasoning. I’ll give my voice a rougher edge. If the opportunity arises, I’d be thrilled to give it a go. I genuinely mean it. I don’t want to lose touch with Spencer. He’s one of my favorites.

During an interview with Variety, Sklenar expressed his desire to reprise his role in the franchise if offered. He mentioned that playing Spencer had a profound impact on him, and he would be thrilled to carry on the character in any way possible.

Hey, I understand that they’re considering a project set in ‘1944’, and it seems possible we might see Spencer in this. Frankly, I’m excited about the prospect. This character really resonates with me, and I think Jules feels the same way. Over these three years, he’s become more than just a role for me – he’s a part of my identity. He’s influenced who I am, and changed me in some ways. So, if given the chance, I’d be thrilled to continue working on this project in any capacity.

Sklenar isn’t the sole 1923 actor eager for another stint in the series; Michelle Randolph, who portrays Elizabeth Dutton, has also expressed her readiness to reprise her role. She shared this intention during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

To clarify, I’m very much present! If only I could be in the year ‘1944‘, it would be a dream come true for me. Unfortunately, I have no clue where the narrative begins or who it focuses on. I’m entirely in the dark about it.

Actress Aminah Nieves, portraying Teonna Rainwater, shares the view that her character could potentially feature in the year 1944. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she was questioned about whether Teonna would still be alive during the events of 1944, and Nieves responded positively, stating “Definitely.

It seems that around 1923, a number of actors have shown interest in featuring in the year 1944’s production. Considering the narrative perspective, it might be quite fitting to have all three characters make an appearance in the series, thus potentially fulfilling their desires.

1944 Could Address These Lingering 1923 Plot Threads

As the upcoming series is set approximately two decades after the events of 1923, it offers a chance to delve into unresolved plot points from that time.

One of the storylines involves who is Kevin Costner’s character, John Dutton’s father. Some viewers believed they had finally received the long-awaited answer in the finale of 1923, when Alexandra named her and Spencer’s baby John. However, actor Brandon Sklenar has raised some questions about this revelation, leaving the identity of John Dutton’s father still uncertain.

It seems likely that the year 1944 will eventually shed light on this matter, and if Spencer and Alex’s child is indeed John Dutton III’s father, there’s a chance that the current family head might make a fleeting appearance as an infant in the forthcoming episodes.

A potential storyline for the novel “1944” could delve into Elizabeth’s pregnancy, considering that at the end of “1923“, she embarked on a journey back to the east coast, her original home, while still pregnant.

1944 might have been significantly influenced by the potential result of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, as her previous pregnancy ended sadly in a miscarriage.

As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but ponder the potential significance of Elizabeth’s baby. If this child were to come into existence, it would serve as a confirmation that another branch of the Dutton family tree flourishes in the eastern part of the United States, adding an intriguing layer to their storied saga on screen.

In the third pivotal narrative development suitable for continuation into the year 1944, we find the Rainwater family taking center stage. As Aminah Nieves hinted, it’s highly plausible that Teonna Rainwater survives until 1944. Given the significance of the Rainwaters within Yellowstone, viewers are eager to unravel the mystery surrounding Teonna and her connection with Thomas Rainwater in this new timeline.

1944 Would Likely Film in Bitterroot Valley

A key aspect of the TV show “Yellowstone” was its authentic filming sites, notably the actual, working ranch which was transformed into the fictional Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.

The Chief Joseph Ranch, as it’s known, sits nestled in the Bitterroot Valley, a stone’s throw south of Missoula, Montana.

At a gathering in Hamilton, Montana (as reported by Ravalli Republic), Tom Prince, Executive Vice President at 101 Studios – one of the companies behind “Yellowstone” – announced that the filming of the upcoming project “1944” will resume in the Bitterroot Valley.

Prince clearly implied that the year 1944 should unfold on the very grounds of Chief Joseph Ranch, as it serves as the backdrop for the series Yellowstone.

Sure thing! “Indeed, we have ‘1923,’ and its sequel is on its way. We’re keeping the title under wraps for now, but I suspect it will be called ‘1944.’ My hunch is that most of the filming will take place in the Bitterroot Valley since the story unfolds at Chief Joseph Ranch.

Shooting at the Chief Joseph Ranch will undoubtedly strengthen the link between the events of 1944 and Yellowstone, and it’s expected that the original design of the ranch depicted in the popular series may be delved into more deeply in the forthcoming show.

1944 is expected to be released sometime in 2026.
