Over the weekend of April 18-20, Ne Zha 2 by Cococartoon regained its leading position at the Chinese box office after a short period of being second place in the last few weeks.
The animated blockbuster brought in approximately RMB 28.9 million ($4 million), raising its total earnings to an impressive $2.116 billion, as reported by Artisan Gateway. In its twelfth week, the movie is still breaking records and maintaining its position as the highest-grossing film of 2025 with a substantial lead over other titles.
In its third weekend, ‘We Girls’ from Meila Media dropped to second place but continued to be a powerful earner, bringing in $3.8 million. This film, directed by Feng Xiaogang, tells the story of Gao Yuexiang, portrayed by Zhao Liying, who resorts to a risky move in order to pay for her daughter’s cochlear implant. This action lands her in prison, where she encounters fellow inmates Hei Mei (Lan Xiya), Deng Hong (Chuai Ni), Hu Ping (Wang Ju), and Guo Aimei (Cheng Xiao). Despite their contrasting personalities, these women forge a connection, standing by each other through hardships and defying the hand that fate has dealt them.
In third place, the Warner Bros. and Legendary production titled “A Minecraft Movie” earned $2.9 million. To date, this adaptation of the famous video game has made a total of $24.2 million in box office sales in China.
The Warner Bros. and Legendary film “A Minecraft Movie” brought in $2.9 million, ranking third. So far, it has earned $24.2 million from its adaptation of the classic video game in Chinese cinemas.
In the box office rankings, “Mumu,” produced by CKF Pictures, maintained its fourth position with an earnings of $1.7 million, raising its overall total to a remarkable $17.5 million. This moving film, helmed by director Mo Sha, narrates the story of a seven-year-old girl who was raised in a deaf community alongside her father. Her peaceful life is upended when her long-lost mother reappears and introduces her to the world of hearing.
As I reflect on the latest box office numbers, Shanghai Film Group’s “Fox Hunt” has managed to secure a spot among the top five earners, pocketing an impressive $1.6 million. This political thriller, which delves into China’s global anti-corruption campaign, has now amassed a total of $9.1 million. Quite a remarkable run for this gripping tale!
As I sat down to share my thoughts on this weekend’s box office performance, I couldn’t help but notice that, while we saw a slight dip in total earnings compared to the previous week, reaching $20.2 million, it’s essential to put things into perspective. The year-to-date gross has now soared to an impressive $3.51 billion, which is a staggering 39% higher than the same period last year. In other words, we are witnessing an unprecedented growth in cinema revenues this 2025!
