In the second episode of Season 2 for “The Last of Us,” there were indeed some significant changes that long-time gamers might recognize.
As a passionate viewer, I can’t help but express my excitement over the recent introduction of a key figure in The Last of Us Season 2 premiere last week: Abby, a former Firefly member with an unyielding determination to take down Joel following the tragic Salt Lake City massacre. She isn’t exactly rushing things, though – she prefers a more deliberate approach.
In Episode 2, it’s her turn for vengeance. After accidentally guiding himself towards his own demise by protecting Abby from a group of attackers, she wounds him in the leg and brutally kills him with a golf club – an act that Ellie is powerless to prevent as he succumbs to his injuries.
This incident is a shocking spectacle destined for notoriety, similar to its video game equivalent. Yet, the show made two crucial adjustments.
Joel’s death had two changes in The Last of Us Season 2
Joel’s demise shares striking similarities with the scenario in The Last of Us game, except for two key differences: firstly, instead of meeting his end peacefully, Abby brutally stabs him in the neck; secondly, unlike other instances, Joel was not alone when he died. He was patrolling alongside Dina during that fateful moment.
In the second part, the sequence of events gets tweaked slightly. Instead of going solo, Joel accompanies Tommy on patrol. During this patrol, they stumble upon Abby who’s surrounded by a group of infected. It is here that Joel rescues and protects Abby, and she guides them back to her house where Owen and the rest of her team reside.
Initially, everything is quite polite, similar to an episode’s start. However, the situation takes a turn for the worse when everyone recognizes it’s Joel. Abby then fires a shotgun at him, wounding his leg, while Tommy becomes unconscious before he could respond.
From then on, it follows much the same pattern, but with a few changes in conversation, one being – instead of what was shown, Joel saying to her something like, “Go ahead and deliver your prepared speech so we can move past this.
In the game, much like in the series, Ellie encounters a house and is quickly overpowered by Abby before she can react. She pleads with Abby to rise, but instead, Abby strikes Ellie’s head repeatedly with a golf club, ultimately killing her. It appears that Abby hit him so brutally hard with the club in Episode 2 that the head of it snapped off, which is why she proceeded to use the sharp end of the broken club to stab him.
The development between Joel and Dina is particularly intriguing, and it underscores the growth in their relationship on the show; in the game, they had minimal interaction with one another.
As a passionate admirer, I recently shared my thoughts with Screen Rant about Neil Druckmann’s work, and here’s what I said: “They clearly took significant creative freedom, all under his approval, to ensure the storyline felt more complete and well-balanced.
If Ellie considers someone as her closest friend, it’s likely that they would have communicated or spent time together. This encounter seems to present a chance to observe their bond, which I find to be quite relaxed yet affectionate. It appears that this person assumes the role of a playful uncle figure, and Ellie feels comfortable enough to share her thoughts with them. In turn, they also feel at ease confiding in her.
Primarily, it’s clear that what unites them deeply is their affection for Ellie, a bond they mutually cherish. It seems to me that Dina, upon encountering them, perceives the growing divide between them and endeavors to heal that rift.
