‘SNL’ Star Bowen Yang Calls Aimee Lou Wood’s Backlash to ‘White Lotus’ Spoof ‘Completely Valid’: ‘Parody Can Go Too Far Sometimes’

On Saturday Night Live, actor Bowen Yang has chosen to support Aimee Lou Wood, the star of “White Lotus,” following her displeasure over a depiction of her character on the late-night comedy series.

During an interview with Extra, Yang expressed that it was entirely understandable for Wood to respond as she did to the “The White POTUS” satire, noting that emotions can sometimes be overshadowed by comedians when they tackle popular cultural themes.

In my perspective as a film critic, her response to that comedic piece was absolutely justified. Often, when we’re dealing with parody, we can overlook the profound personal and emotional toll it may inflict upon an individual.

Everyone at SNL is simply avid fans of the show, clearly admirers of hers,” he continued. “We believe she should be incredibly proud of her efforts during the season, as it was once again captivating television that we crave. It serves as a reminder that sometimes we overlook these achievements, and it seems like she’s discussed this with people at SNL. I hope there’s an opportunity to move past this. However, reminders like these are necessary occasionally, as parody can occasionally exceed boundaries. As comedians, we should acknowledge this instead of stubbornly insisting that we have the right to say whatever we want. This isn’t about being politically correct or woke; it’s just part of our culture.

The comedic sketch titled “The White POTUS,” broadcasted on April 12, primarily focused on former President Donald Trump and his supporters, as the implementation of tariffs affected the global economy. The performance showcased James Austin Johnson portraying the president, Chloe Fineman as Melania Trump, Mikey Day as Donald Trump Jr., and Jon Hamm in the role of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

In the pre-recorded spoof, the character of Wood’s Chelsea from Chelsea Handler’s show, was the sole one resembling a “White Lotus” cast member. Performed by Sarah Sherman, she was caricatured with an overly dramatic British accent and oversized false teeth.
