I’m thrilled to be part of the excitement surrounding “The Minecraft Movie,” which has been steadily climbing towards the $1 billion milestone in worldwide box office earnings, currently standing at an impressive $720 million just three weeks into its release!
Over the Easter holiday weekend, I witnessed “Minecraft” rake in an impressive $169 million worldwide, with $59 million of that coming from international box offices and another staggering $100 million globally. This blockbuster, featuring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, has now earned a total of $376.2 million overseas and $720.8 million worldwide so far.
Already, this film has become the highest-grossing movie of the year in Hollywood, and if it continues at its current pace, it will be the first to surpass the billion-dollar mark. It’s an exciting time for fans of “Minecraft” as we eagerly await this milestone!
Concurrently, “Sinners,” a vampire thriller from the director of “Black Panther,” Ryan Coogler, and starring Michael B. Jordan, has earned an impressive $15.6 million overseas across 71 markets. However, it made significantly more in the U.S. and Canada, leading the box office with a massive $45.6 million. In total, “Sinners” has accumulated $61 million globally in its opening weekend. This is an excellent start for an original, R-rated horror film set in the 1930s, but with a substantial production budget of $90 million (before global marketing costs), profitability is still a goal to be achieved in the future.
Globally, the highest sales were recorded in the UK, amounting to approximately $3.2 million, followed by France with around $2 million and Mexico with about $1.1 million. Imax, a well-liked premium large format, contributed around $2 million to the international box office earnings.
In the show “Sinners,” Jordan portrays the identical twins Smoke and Stack. The story follows their journey back home to the South where they establish a juke joint, which initially thrives… until vampires invade the small town. Critics and viewers alike have praised “Sinners,” with the movie earning an impressive 98% average on Rotten Tomatoes. This high rating suggests that positive word of mouth about the film is likely to spread.
Thanks to the successes of “A Minecraft Movie” and “Sinners,” Warner Bros. managed to claim the top two positions at both domestic and international box offices, as well as globally. This marks a significant turnaround for the studio following the financial disappointments of Robert De Niro’s “The Alto Knights” and “Mickey 17,” directed by Bong Joon Ho and starring Robert Pattinson.
