In its opening weekend, “Sinners,” a unique, mature vampire thriller directed by Ryan Coogler and featuring Michael B. Jordan, outperformed all other films, even against tough rivalry from “A Minecraft Movie.
With rave reviews and the combined fame of Coogler and Jordan, the movie “Sinners” amassed a robust $45.6 million from 3,308 North American cinemas upon its release. This box office haul represents the largest premiere for an original film since “Us,” directed by Jordan Peele, earned $71 million in 2019. However, Warner Bros. poured a significant $90 million into the production of “Sinners” (excluding international marketing costs), leaving its profitability uncertain.
Worldwide, the film “Sinners” collected an additional $15.4 million, bringing its total earnings to $61 million at the box office.
David A. Gross, head of the FranchiseRe movie consulting firm, notes that this opening for a horror film in period setting is exceptional and likely to do well currently. Yet, he cautions, the substantial production expenses will loom large and establish a significant hurdle for achieving profitability.
Over the last few weekends, I’ve been eagerly anticipating that the Minecraft movie from Warner Bros. would take the No. 1 spot again. However, to my surprise, it had to settle for second place this time around, raking in an impressive $41.3 million. Starring the talented duo of Jack Black and Jason Momoa, this PG-rated adaptation of a video game has been a massive hit, grossing an astounding $344 million domestically and a mind-blowing $720.8 million worldwide. As of now, it stands tall as the highest-grossing Hollywood film of 2021, far surpassing the global earnings of Disney and Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World” ($410 million).
In the 1930s, the movie “Sinners” features Jordan portraying twin brothers Smoke and Stack, who return home to the South and establish a juke joint. However, their peaceful life is disrupted when vampires invade the small town. Audiences found this supernatural horror film quite appealing, as indicated by an ‘A’ grade on CinemaScore surveys. Interestingly, “Sinners” is the only horror movie in over 35 years to receive such a high rating from CinemaScore. It’s worth noting that while scary movies are usually immune to critical reviews at the box office, they don’t typically elicit positive responses from viewers. However, “Sinners” has bucked this trend, as it boasts an impressive 98% average rating on Rotten Tomatoes, suggesting strong word-of-mouth potential.
Michael B. Jordan has featured in multiple films directed by Ryan Coogler, such as “Creed,” a spinoff of the “Rocky” series, and “Black Panther” from Marvel. The pair have shown an aptitude for predicting box office success, but with “Sinners” being their first original project, they have solidified themselves as unique Hollywood talents who can fill cinemas solely on their reputation. Warner Bros. was eager to collaborate with Coogler, and in order to do so, they provided a substantial budget and negotiated an uncommon deal that allows the filmmaker to gain ownership of the film rights for “Sinners” after 25 years. This is an exceptionally generous arrangement, even for films directed by Steven Spielberg.
Sinners” and a Minecraft film are assisting Warner Bros. in reversing the negative impact on the box office from recent flops, such as “The Alto Knights” starring Robert De Niro and “Mickey 17,” directed by Bong Joon Ho and featuring Robert Pattinson.
In our effort to deliver a variety of films that captivate viewers, we’re delighted by the incredible response ‘Sinners’, directed by Ryan Coogler, and ‘Minecraft’ have received,” commented Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-chairs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy. “Films offer an escape to realms that can only be explored on the big screen, and Warner Bros. Pictures is dedicated to providing unique cinematic experiences for those seeking daring movies – whether they’re fresh ideas or adaptations of cherished properties.
Finishing third in its second weekend, “The King of Kings” brought in an impressive $17 million from 3,535 theaters, showing only a minimal 10% drop compared to its opening weekend. Angel Studios is supporting this animated religious film about the life of Jesus, which saw increased earnings due to the Easter holiday season. To date, the movie, with Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, and Mark Hamill as part of its voice cast, has made $45 million in the U.S. market.
In a shift of positions, “The Amateur,” Disney’s action-packed spy film featuring Rami Malek as a vengeful CIA analyst, slipped to fourth place, earning $6.8 million at 3,400 theaters. After two weekends in cinemas, it has raked in only $27 million domestically and $64 million globally, against its production cost of $60 million. This makes “The Amateur” a potential box office disappointment for Disney, following closely behind “Snow White,” which has also underperformed with earnings of $184 million versus a heftier budget of $250 million.
In North American theaters, “Warfare,” a combat thriller from A24, earned $4.8 million, placing it in the top five. With two weekends under its belt, the film has amassed a total of $17.8 million, which is impressive for an independent production. However, considering its production budget of $20 million and the fact that theater owners receive about half of ticket sales, “Warfare” must continue performing well to turn a profit.
In other cinemas, “The Wedding Banquet” by Bleecker Street, a contemporary reinterpretation of Ang Lee’s 1993 humorous tale of misunderstandings with a queer theme, struggled during its premiere, earning only $922,906 from 1,139 theaters across North America. The film, which has received positive reviews, features Lily Gladstone, Bowen Yang, and Kelly Marie Tran in the cast. It tells the story of an exchange student who stages a fake wedding with his lesbian best friend rather than his boyfriend. This is not to help him obtain a green card but to assist her financially with her IVF treatments. However, their plans for a secret elopement are disrupted when his grandmother unexpectedly arrives from Korea to organize a grand wedding instead.
