Star Wars New Movies Risk Repeat of Solo’s Box Office Flop

The upcoming Star Wars films, namely The Mandalorian and Grogu, are eagerly anticipated, but they may encounter the same hurdle that Solo: A Star Wars Story faced in 2018. This issue is likely to persist due to Lucasfilm’s announcement at Star Wars Celebration 2025 about Shawn Levy’s Star Wars movie, Star Wars: Starfighter, being released later on.

To put it simply, among the announcements at Star Wars Celebration 2025, the news that Ryan Gosling would be starring in a new movie called “Starfighter” took many by surprise. There’s been a lot of buzz surrounding this film, just like there has been for The Mandalorian and Grogu for quite some time now. However, it seems Star Wars might be shooting itself in the foot with both these movies, implying that the franchise hasn’t taken any lessons from “Solo” at all.

Solo: A Star Wars Story Released Against Avengers: Infinity War In 2018

Infinity War Was One Of The Most Highly Anticipated MCU Movies Of All Time

On May 10, 2018, the film ‘Solo’ made its debut, placing it side by side with ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ in the movie market. By this time, ‘Infinity War’ had been playing in cinemas for almost two weeks, having been released on April 27, 2018. It’s safe to say that the excitement surrounding ‘Solo’ was somewhat overshadowed by the anticipation for ‘Infinity War’, one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most eagerly awaited films to date.

The disappointing news hit Solo hard, as it was already predicted to face difficulties due to its performance. Historically, the Star Wars series has been a box office sensation, but this success is largely attributed to the devotion and affection of fans towards the Skywalker Saga. Not only did Solo stray from that saga, but it also introduced a new actor playing Han Solo, a role that has always posed challenges in this franchise. Despite needing an actor younger than Harrison Ford for the era in which Solo is set, this fanbase tends to be resistant to change.

Competing Solo against a highly anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe film, which was the climax of all previous Avengers movies, likely contributed to Solo’s disappointing box office results. Despite this, it’s clear that Solo didn’t win over many viewers, with some still considering it one of Star Wars’ weakest films. However, it’s also true that facing off against MCU movies, particularly Avengers movies, may not be the best strategy for Star Wars. So, it seems surprising that Disney would repeat this move, especially with not just one but two new Star Wars movies on the horizon.

The Mandalorian & Grogu And Star Wars: Starfighter Release Against The Next 2 Avengers Movies

These Are Star Wars’ First Theatrical Releases In Years

The release dates for “The Mandalorian” and Grogu, as well as Starfighter, have been officially set. The Mandalorian and Grogu will premiere on May 22, 2026, while Starfighter is scheduled for May 28, 2027. Interestingly, these dates put them in direct competition with the next two Avengers movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe: “Avengers: Doomsday,” set to release on May 1, 2026, and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” scheduled for May 7, 2027.

These upcoming Star Wars projects, including The Mandalorian and Grogu, as well as Starfighter, mark a significant departure for the franchise, much like Solo did before them. This is because they are Star Wars’ first new films in years, with The Mandalorian and Grogu being released nearly seven years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Consequently, there’s a lot riding on these movies, but it seems that Star Wars might be repeating the risks taken with Solo.

Essentially, the situation with these new Avengers films resembles what we saw with Solo earlier, as they are crucial once more, much like Infinity War did. Just as Doomsday will be a significant event in the MCU – being the first Avengers movie since Endgame – it’ll also bring back some cherished characters and actors, attracting enormous crowds. Unfortunately, this could pose challenges for The Mandalorian and Grogu, but what makes this unique is that Disney appears to be competing against itself in this scenario.

Is Disney Hurting Itself By Pitting Star Wars Against The Avengers?

In A Way, Disney Is Competing Against Itself

It appears that Disney now controls both Star Wars and Marvel/the MCU, leading one to suspect that setting these movie franchises in competition might not be beneficial for Disney itself. It’s quite peculiar how both series seem so dedicated to May as their prime release month, considering the unusual pattern where new Star Wars films often follow fresh Avengers movies. If there’s a plan behind this from Disney, it’s hard to discern.

It’s exciting to anticipate the development of the story involving ‘The Mandalorian’ and Grogu, as they exist outside the main Star Wars saga, similar to ‘Solo’ and ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.’ However, unlike those films, ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ has generated substantial excitement. Given its connection to the popular series, it might fare better than ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story.’ Nevertheless, I have reservations due to their release dates.
