Travis’s Drunken Moment in Yellowjackets Finale Hints at Horrible Future

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Yellowjackets season 3, episode 10, “Full Circle.”

In the final episode of season 3, a brief scene hints at Travis Martinez’s (Kevin Alves) future following his rescue. From the start of the series in season 1, Travis has been known as one of the confirmed adult survivors of Yellowjackets. The character is portrayed by Andrés Soto in adulthood. One of the show’s early enigmas revolves around his death, with Natalie Scattorcio (Juliette Lewis) suspecting he was murdered and seeking to uncover the truth behind his mysterious demise.

In the timeline of the show Yellowjackets set in the ’90s, Travis has endured a lot of hardship. This begins when his father, Coach Bill Martinez (Carlos Sanz), passes away during the plane crash. The death of his younger brother, Javi (Luciano Leroux), in season 2 of Yellowjackets adds to his sorrow. Although teenage Travis is destined to eventually escape the wilderness, he’s still battling profound grief by the end of season 3.

Travis Was Drunk During The Hunt In Yellowjackets Season 3’s Finale

It Is Not The First Time This Season

Travis, in the throes of his grief, resorts to excessive drinking during the hunt for sacrifice. This habit becomes glaringly obvious when he encounters Shauna Shipman (Sophie Nélisse). Stumbling over his words, he attempts to convey that the events unfolding aren’t genuine, expressing doubt about the reality they find themselves in. Occasionally, he claims to hear the thoughts of deceased individuals such as Javi and Jackie Taylor (Ella Purnell) in his mind. In simpler terms, Travis turns to alcohol as a coping mechanism for dealing with the overwhelming grief and the harrowing reality that he and the other Yellowjackets are facing.

Previously on the show, Lottie (Courtney Eaton) made Travis consume psychedelic mushrooms to induce visions and connect with nature. For most of the season, Travis has been in a constant state of intoxication, as highlighted by the episode title “12 Angry Girls and 1 Drunk Travis” during Coach Ben Scott’s (Steven Krueger) trial. Although he hasn’t been the main focus this season, Travis has endured throughout, and his struggles persist even in the season finale.

Travis & Natalie Turn To Drugs & Alcohol To Cope With Their Trauma As Adults In Yellowjackets

The Season 3 Finale Provides A Glimpse Of Their Future

In the finale of season 3 of “Yellowjackets,” it is hinted that Travis’ drunkenness could indicate a lifelong battle with substance abuse, stemming from his and Natalie’s shared struggle to manage their post-traumatic stress disorder. They resort to drugs and alcohol as a means of escape. It’s also noted that Natalie has a history of drug overdose incidents, requiring her to attend several rehabilitation programs. The duo’s addictions significantly impact the toxic nature of their relationship as adults.

It’s heartbreakingly ironic that, despite being just a teenager, Travis has already resorted to alcohol as a means to alleviate his suffering, before he is saved. The character Mari Ibarra, portrayed by Alexa Barajas, being the Pit Girl in ‘Yellowjackets’ only adds to the grimness of Travis’ tale, given that he was responsible for setting up the stakes at the bottom of the pits that eventually took Mari’s life. Mari’s death serves as another heavy burden on Travis, one that will likely haunt him throughout his existence, and may also contribute to his dependence on substances.
