Leaders from Lucasfilm unveiled additional surprises during the last day of the three-day Star Wars Celebration fan gathering in Tokyo. Starting October 29th, nine new “Star Wars: Visions” shorts will be released on Disney+. Additionally, a longform series titled “The Ninth Jedi,” which is a spinoff from an earlier “Visions” short and directed by Kenji Kamiyama, is also in the works.
The announcement of “The Ninth Jedi” series was made grandly by James Waugh, Lucasfilm’s senior vice president of franchise content and strategy, during the event. He invited Kamiyama on stage, who expressed gratitude to the audience for their support and excitement towards the journeys of characters Kara and Juro in “The Ninth Jedi” as well as the upcoming story “Child of Hope,” as reported by Disney’s official StarWars.com fan site.
Later, it was revealed that fans can look forward to following Kara’s story further in a new spinoff titled “The Ninth Jedi,” part of ‘Star Wars: Visions’, as mentioned on the site.
2021 saw the debut of “Star Wars: Visions” on Disney+, with the initial release comprising nine animated shorts. Among these, there was one titled “The Ninth Jedi,” which follows a lightsaber-smith’s daughter who is hunted by ominous forces during a perilous mission. The voices behind Lah Kara and Margrave Juro in this short film were provided by Chinatsu Akasaki and Tetsuo Kanao respectively.
In May 2023, the second set of nine animated shorts was released. Among these, the episode named “Screecher’s Reach” won the Emmy Award for Directing in an Animated Television or Media Production last year, with director Paul Young receiving the accolade.
As a movie critic, I’m thrilled to share that the third installment of “Star Wars: Visions” will feature a captivating short film titled “Child of Hope.” This intriguing piece continues the compelling narrative of “The Ninth Jedi,” focusing on the characters Kara and Juro. Regrettably, at this moment, there’s no definitive release date for the full-length series, but rest assured, it’s coming!
