WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Ransom Canyon.
In Netflix’s latest Western series Ransom Canyon, the persistent conflict between Davis Collins and Staten Kirkland is driven by romantic rivalry, property disputes, and centuries-old small-town animosity. Despite being brothers-in-law following Staten’s wife’s (Davis’s sister’s) demise, Josh Duhamel’s character Staten and Eoin Macken’s Davis have a history of friction that predates their current situation. The Kirkland and Collins families are among the wealthiest in Ransom Canyon, and their wealth significantly influences the town as a whole.
Davis and Staten share a hometown bond as they grew up together in Ransom Canyon. While Staten inherited his vast ranch from his grandfather, Davis isn’t a traditional rancher but is still wealthy. Interestingly, Davis was Randall’s uncle who gifted him a sports car on his birthday, which unfortunately led to Randall’s tragic accident. Reid, Davis’s son, seeks refuge at Staten’s house early in Ransom Canyon, demonstrating that despite their competitive nature, they are still tied by blood. Over the course of the series, the relationship between Davis and Staten undergoes various developments, including a physical altercation in the finale of Ransom Canyon.
The Kirkland & Collins Families Have Been At Odds In Ransom Canyon For Decades
It’s Surprising That Staten Even Married Davis’s Sister In The First Place
As a movie reviewer, let me say that in Ransom Canyon, Staten and Davis’s familial ties run deep yet are tainted by generations-old rivalry. The fact that Staten wed a Collins surely stirred up controversy on both sides, but this aspect is not deeply explored in the film. Despite their complex history, it becomes clear when Reid plays a recording of his mother, Paula Jo, confessing to coercing Staten into selling his land, that Davis feels betrayed. He reprimands his son for letting a “Kirkland” overpower him, which adds an intriguing twist to their family dynamics. On one hand, they behave as close relatives, but on the other, they embody fierce adversaries depending on the issue at hand.
In the novel, Ransom Canyon, there’s a complex mix of affection and animosity among several characters, such as Lucas and Lauren, Reid and Lucas. This dynamic seems to echo the intricate relationships typical of small towns like Ransom Canyon, where people often find themselves entangled in each other’s affairs to some extent.
However, it appears that the Davis family’s hostility towards the Kirklands, and vice versa, goes beyond a simple land dispute for a water pipeline. For instance, Davis shows kindness to Staten and Randall, yet simultaneously conspires with Staten’s father to force him off his own ranch. This intriguing aspect of the story is hinted at in Ransom Canyon but remains largely unexplored. It seems there’s a deeper history that needs to be uncovered, one that could shed light on the reasons behind their long-standing feud.
Davis & Paula Jo Work With Austin Water & Power To Force Staten To Sell His Land
Staten & Cap Refuse To Sell Because It Would Tarnish Their Legacies As Ranchers
Davis is deeply entangled with his former wife, Paula Jo, who sits on the board at Austin Water & Power, in an effort to acquire as much land as feasible for their water pipeline project. They are trying to persuade Staten and Cap Fuller to part with their ranches for a substantial amount of money, enabling them to lay down a pipeline that would greatly benefit A&WP.
In a nutshell, this decision significantly shifts the balance of power within Ransom Canyon’s ranching community, potentially rendering two of its key figures, Staten and Cap, obsolete and excluded from the local scene. Sadly, Cap’s demise leaves his ranch in the hands of his grandson, Yancy Grey, who chooses not to liquidate it, thus shaping a new era for Ransom Canyon’s ranching landscape.
Davis is incredibly driven to own both Staten’s and Cap’s land, a desire that borders on greed, making him rather unsavory. His ex-wife, Paula Jo, while different in her approach, shares the same questionable ethics. She attempts to justify their actions to Reid by claiming they act for his future and their family’s legacy. However, the Collins are not above using underhanded methods to achieve their goals, causing harm to decent citizens of the community along the way.
Why Davis & Staten’s Father Colluded Against Staten In The Ransom Canyon Finale
Both Of Them Want Staten Out Of The Picture In Ransom Canyon
In other words, Davis cleverly manipulated Staten by saying exactly what would provoke him, setting the stage for a physical altercation that could ultimately result in Staten’s loss of the Kirkland ranch in the upcoming season of “Ransom Canyon”. It becomes evident as Davis steps into Staten’s father’s car at the end of “Ransom Canyon” that he deliberately goaded Staten into attacking him, intending to use this incident as evidence against Staten before the board of trustees. Staten’s influential father, who is a Senator, and Davis plan to exploit this punch to their advantage in the next season of “Ransom Canyon”, potentially leading to Staten losing his ranch altogether.
