Over a dozen years ago, I had the privilege of working on an unfinished animated comedy series that sadly remained hidden from public view. Recently, to my astonishment, this long-forgotten project received recognition from Lucasfilm during their 20th anniversary celebration of Lucasfilm Animation. The series in question was none other than “Star Wreck: Origins,” the brainchild of the team behind “Robot Chicken” – a testament to their creativity and ingenuity. Though nearly 40 episodes were completed and numerous other scripts written, this project never saw the light of day.
The unexpected return of “Detours” was hinted in a poster published by Lucasfilm, which brought together characters from various Star Wars animated shows and films, such as “The Clone Wars” and “Rebels,” and surprisingly, “Detours.” This subtle Easter egg delighted fans who appreciate such hidden gems in the vast Star Wars universe. The poster showcased one of the most obscure references by featuring an unusually designed Stormtrooper with large, googly eyes, crumpled at the bottom right corner – a character reminiscent of those from the previously unavailable series.
What Was ‘Star Wars: Detours’ About and Will It Ever Be Released?
It’s hard to picture a series from one of the world’s largest franchises, brimming with nearly 40 episodes of fresh content, yet it seems they will likely remain undisclosed, like a Disney princess confined in a tower under the strict supervision of an authoritative and oppressive guardian. However, as far back as 2012, before Disney made one of their largest studio acquisitions, Lucasfilm was contemplating various Star Wars projects, and one of those ideas originated from Seth Green and Matt Senreich.
At the 2012 Star Wars Celebration event, it was announced that Star Wars: Detours would be produced, with George Lucas supporting the project. This seemed to indicate that the self-deprecating comedy series would certainly air and enrich the Star Wars franchise. However, when Disney acquired Lucasfilm, many aspects changed, including the decision to put Detours on hold, despite numerous episodes being finished and a trailer for the show being unveiled.
In 2021, Green discussed the latest talks about the project with Lucasfilm and Disney. His remarks weren’t overly positive, and given that the series hasn’t been released yet, it seems those who were not eagerly anticipating the show made a wise choice. During this conversation, Green stated:
According to my latest discussions with knowledgeable sources, it appears that the Star Wars: Clone Wars series episodes completed for broadcast (a total of 39) are not expected to be released imminently. These episodes were finalized about a decade ago, so they would require some reworking to meet Disney+ and Lucasfilm standards. I’ve been informed that there hasn’t been sufficient high-level interest to undertake the necessary work for its release, and Lucasfilm currently has no plans to distribute this content on Disney+.
Currently, people are wondering if the subtle nod to the series on Lucasfilm’s commemorative poster might hint at even the slightest possibility that maybe, just maybe, the animated series “Detours” could eventually find its place within the Star Wars universe.
