In the culmination of an entire season’s worth of tension, The Wheel of Time has unveiled the outcome for Rosamund Pike’s character. Since her ordeal in the glass columns of Rhuidean, Moiraine Damodred had been under the impression that she was destined not to make it through her upcoming confrontation with Lanfear. Given that Pike is the lead actress in Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time novels, there was a valid concern among viewers about her character’s future prospects.

In the original storyline, Moiraine’s confrontation with Lanfear ended in what seemed like her “death“. However, she didn’t actually perish, but the event had profound long-term consequences. The show, specifically The Wheel of Time season 3, spent a significant portion exploring how they would handle this plot twist, and ultimately portrayed the pivotal scene in the final episode of the third season. Remarkably, Moiraine emerged victorious in her battle against Lanfear, opening up a whole new chapter for her character’s storyline.

What Happened To Moiraine In The Wheel Of Time Books

Moiraine Disappeared After A Successful Attempt To Stop Lanfear

In “The Shadow Rising”, Moiraine didn’t confront Lanfear while they were in the Aiel Waste alongside Rand’s group, but their confrontation occurred in the subsequent book, “The Fires of Heaven”. This altercation took place in Cairhein, sparked by Lanfear’s fury upon learning about Rand’s growing intimacy with Aviendha. When Lanfear assaulted, Moiraine stepped in to shield Rand, resulting in a demonstration of their respective One Power abilities. Given Lanfear’s considerable power, it was no surprise that she maintained the upper hand throughout the conflict.

Moiraine, realizing it would require extreme action to halt Lanfear, thrust them both into a ter’angreal portal. Following this incident, their fates were believed to be sealed for quite some duration. As a result, she was absent from multiple “Wheel of Time” novels until the book “Towers of Midnight,” marking her reappearance in the thirteenth installment. In the storyline, Thom and Mat’s group discovered her – she had been trapped in a state of suspension within the Tower of Ghenjei, which serves as a junction to the realms of the Aelfinn and Eelfinn, the fox-like creatures that Mat met during the series finale.

It seems that passing through the ter’angreal door transported Moiraine to the realms of the Aelfinn and the Eelfinn. After Mat and Thom liberated her, Moiraine Damodred resumed a significant role in the storyline. Yet, the series was approaching its end at this stage. In essence, The Wheel of Time brought Moiraine back into play for her to be a crucial character in only one more book – the concluding volume, A Memory of Light.

Sakarnen Was The Key To The Wheel Of Time Changing Moiraine’s Fate

Sakarnen Had Nothing To Do With Moiraine’s Book Story

In the TV adaptation of “The Wheel of Time,” it made sense that a situation where Moiraine would have to sacrifice something significant to defeat Lanfear was plausible, given her power level in the books. However, introducing Sakarnen into the storyline set up a different direction for the series. While Moiraine did not possess this powerful sa’angreal in the original novels, its inclusion balanced the odds and allowed Moiraine to fight back more effectively. Consequently, the show was able to portray Moiraine as the winner, albeit with assistance from Lan and additional motivation from Siuan’s demise.

In the adapted version, Moiraine suffered severe injuries and Lanfear managed to escape, a turn of events quite different from what occurred in the original storyline. This alteration spared both characters from lengthy departures from the narrative, a situation that may not have arisen if Moiraine hadn’t decided to seize Sakarnen from Avendesora within Rhudiean city.

Moiraine Winning The Fight With Lanfear May Not Cause Any Immediate Book Changes

The Wheel Of Time Still Has A Few Moiraine Stories From The First Few Books To Tell

When considering the potential consequences of altering Moiraine and Lanfear’s fight in The Wheel of Time, it’s crucial to keep in mind the shifts that may occur in the sequence of events. Their battle took place towards the end of book 5, titled The Fires of Heaven. At this point, Rand had already acquired the Stone of Tear, established authority over Cairhein, and was communicating with Elaida regarding her ascension to power as the Amyrlin Seat. It’s likely that many events from The Dragon Reborn and The Fires of Heaven will still unfold, and given the narrative progression, it wouldn’t be unexpected for all these events to occur in season 4.

Since Moiraine has been integral to most of the book’s events, it’s likely that her character won’t undergo significant alterations, at least not immediately concerning her role. The narrative seems set to unfold as originally planned, including Moiraine offering political guidance to Rand in Cairhein and using Balefire to slay a Forsaken at the Stone of Tear.

Most Of Moiraine’s Stories Will Differ Considerably From The Wheel Of Time Books

Moiraine Wasn’t In Most Of The Books The Show Will Adapt Later On

In the narrative of “The Wheel of Time,” the storyline is set to undergo significant alterations due to the decision to continue the character arc of Moiraine. Given the numerous challenges that were addressed without her presence, such as the Battle of Dumai’s Wells, Rand’s captivity by the Red Ajah, the establishment of the Black Tower, and Rand’s subsequent conflicts with the remaining Forsaken, it remains uncertain how these events would have unfolded had Moiraine not vanished. The upcoming series now has an opportunity to explore these possibilities.

As a cinephile, I’m intrigued about the role Moiraine might play in the impending confrontation between Rand and the Aes Sedai. In “Lord of Chaos,” we saw members of the Red Ajah unite to restrain and temper Rand. Having Moiraine by his side could bring a fresh perspective to this battle, maybe even prompting Moiraine herself to take direct action against Elaida.

Additionally, Rand’s act of gathering and educating only male channelers presents an intriguing aspect that could see Moiraine either approving or disapproving. In terms of narrative possibilities for The Wheel of Time, this decision opens up numerous scenarios where Moiraine might shape the events in forthcoming book adaptations.
