Better Than Anyone Could’ve Expected

As a movie enthusiast, I must say that the anticipation surrounding Gladiator II was already high due to its two Golden Globe nominations and an Academy Award nod for Best Costume Design. But let me tell you, it surpassed even my highest expectations! Although Paul Mescal isn’t Russell Crowe, he still delivers a compelling performance that keeps the story moving.

Now, while the film might have taken some creative liberties with historical events to deliver those jaw-dropping colosseum sequences, it certainly didn’t disappoint in the entertainment department. And hey, who am I to complain? It may not be strictly necessary, but as a cinephile, I can wholeheartedly appreciate this sequel!

Back in the 30s and 40s, Universal was synonymous with monster movies, with timeless tales like Dracula and Frankenstein under their belt. Among these iconic films, The Wolf Man, released in 1941, left a lasting impression. The character has been a cornerstone for the studio ever since.

In recent years, Universal attempted to revitalize its monster films with a shared universe, starting with Tom Cruise’s take on The Mummy in the 2010s. In the movie, a group of teenagers, portrayed by Rachel Zegler, Julian Dennison, and Jaeden Martell, attend a New Year’s Eve party. As the clock strikes twelve, pandemonium ensues as youths are viciously assaulted by devices that have gone awry due to their malfunctioning.

An Offbeat Horror-Comedy

If you’re acquainted with Kyle Mooney’s previous works, you wouldn’t find it unexpected that he’s the brains behind the movie “Y2K“. This horror-comedy shares the same quirky humor as Mooney’s past projects, such as his discarded skits from his time on Saturday Night Live. The film unfortunately lost in its nominations for Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Song, a decision that seems questionable given the quality of Sing Sing.

In light of its stellar cast, Max is an ideal platform for “The Parenting” film. Brian Cox, famously known for his acclaimed performance as the head of the Roy family in HBO’s “Succession,” takes on a parental role here. Edie Falco, best remembered as Tony’s wife from HBO’s “The Sopranos,” shares the screen with Cox as his spouse in “The Parenting.” Lisa Kudrow, who initially rose to fame on “Friends” (a series that has been streaming on Max since its launch), also features as a parent.
