Brian Norris portrays Cowboy Hat, a secretive cartel member who operates under Jorge. Norris is recognized for his work on shows like Walker, Perry Mason, The Rookie: Feds, and General Hospital.
In this conversation, we delve into Brian Norris’ thoughts on the surprising wedding plot development, explore the emotional depth of Cowboy Hat regarding Thony, gain insights into his character’s history, and learn which episode from The Cleaning Lady season 4 he eagerly anticipates seeing on TV.
The Cleaning Lady Season 4 Will Reveal More About Cowboy Hat
“I’ve got a lot of secrets. I think that the biggest challenge ended up being the most fun.”
ScreenRant: What excited you most about joining The Cleaning Lady for season 4?
As a film reviewer, let me share my thoughts: The experience of working alongside Élodie Yung and Santiago Cabrera was electrifying! But if I had to single out one aspect that truly blew me away, it would be the wardrobe department. When I stepped into the fitting room, I knew we were in for something special. Dressing up as a Vegas cowboy version of Scarface? Absolutely stunning! The collection they put together was outstanding, a true testament to their craftsmanship.
Your character’s name is Cowboy Hat, so you know you’re going to have a cool wardrobe.
As a die-hard film enthusiast, on my very first day, they led me to an Albuquerque haberdashery that’s been around for ages – I believe it’s been in operation since the dawn of time! This is the same shop that crafted Bryan Cranston’s iconic Heisenberg hat for Breaking Bad. Just stepping into this place was already making my year, and then they tailored not one but two custom hats for me! What a fantastic day it turned out to be!
What is it that particularly intrigues you about this character? It’s because he’s quite enigmatic – we don’t have much insight into his background.
Brian Norris: I hold many secrets. I found that the most challenging aspect turned out to be the most enjoyable. Often, modern television production leaves little room for surprises since viewers are already aware of most details. For this project, however, our team had to establish a comprehensive guide and solution for everything, which led to an abundance of background information to draw from and develop further. The main focus was establishing a solid foundation for the mystery.
He lacks the same ties as everyone else does. Unlike others who have family and personal responsibilities on the show, I have none of that. Consequently, shaping my life in this way presented a unique challenge due to its implicit nature, but it turned out to be an incredibly enjoyable experience. I’d find myself sending Dan emails at midnight with ideas for his character, and it was thrilling.
Do you have a detailed background story planned out for Cowboy Hat? It seems like you’ve been brainstorming some concepts.
Brian Norris: I’ve got some thoughts that I prefer to keep confidential for now. However, rest assured, you’ll find everything you need during the course of the season on-screen. We’re quite open about things. When I arrived on set, a couple of writers approached me and simply said, “We have some exciting surprises in store for you,” then they would walk away. I couldn’t help but wonder, “What exactly are those surprises?
Norris Enjoys Playing With Thony And Cowboy Hat’s Dynamic
“If I have my first moment seeing her as more than just a problem, then it’s actually a moment of closeness.”
How does Cowboy Hat feel about Thony? His leader seems to be a bit invested in her.
Brian Norris: Honestly, I’m not a fan of this situation at all. It seems like I’m often questioning, “What on earth are we doing here?” My first encounter with her required me to forcefully drive close enough for her to roll down the window and even threaten her. To be honest, I don’t think I can fully trust her yet. That’s my take on it.
What were your thoughts on Thony and Jorge’s marriage? Were you surprised by the twist?
As a movie enthusiast, let me share my thoughts: In Episode 4, the twist took me completely by surprise! I had been told that something exciting was on the horizon, and boy, was it ever! The protagonist is elusive, always one step ahead, leaving you feeling like you’ve got her figured out. It’s as if she opens a door, and just when you think you have a handle on her, she slips away. Truly an engaging ride!
We plan to bring her into play now, as we’re about to wrap things up. However, she has a secret trick up her sleeve, and I must acknowledge that. I believe this is the move that Cowboy Hat admires the most. It’s almost like, “Ah, you’re a bit eccentric. You’re a wild card. Gotcha, I see what you’re doing. Entertaining!
What questions did you have about Cowboy Hat as the actor?
Brian Norris: Allow me to share two points. Firstly, throughout our discussions, I repeatedly asked the writers for an opportunity to include a scene set in a honky-tonk. To me, this is where a character like Cowboy Hat unwinds after a long day. Since I don’t have a family to return to, a bar seems like the next best place – drinking, dancing on tables, and spending time with as many women as possible. This was an aspect I wanted to delve into a bit more.
One topic we touched upon briefly during filming, particularly in Episode 4, revolved around parents. A conversation I had with Thony, where I inquire about her singing to her child, presents numerous creative possibilities. If I view her with suspicion, it becomes a threatening situation, one of the most ominous threats throughout the series. However, if this is my first moment recognizing her as more than just an obstacle, it transforms into a moment of connection and an opportunity to delve deeper, to understand her better, and to explore our dynamic – an experience that was intriguing and exhilarating.
Is there an upcoming episode you’re excited for fans to see?
In simpler terms, Brian Norris is expressing his enthusiasm for Episode 4, specifically the thrilling chase sequence where they exit their vehicles, which he particularly enjoyed filming throughout the entire production process. For him, episodes 8 and 9 are especially exciting due to their intense action, so viewers should look forward to them.
What other projects do you have in the pipeline?
Brian Norris: I’m wrapping up a movie, and it’s a hauntingly captivating psychological horror titled The Doppelganger. This story centers around a couple seeking solace in the woods to mend their marriage. However, their journey takes an unexpected turn when they encounter a demon capable of shape-shifting, who thrives on emotional turmoil. Consequently, chaos ensues.
Wrapping up an exciting journey now! It was a blast diving into various creative realms, from the vibrant, action-packed TV series where I got to don outrageous costumes and relish in all the fun, explosive action, to a more subtle, intimate character study. Can’t wait for everyone to experience this movie once it’s complete!
