For approximately ten years, Ryan Coogler has earned a reputation as a beloved filmmaker. His creative work on Creed and Black Panther set an impressive standard. Now, he’s venturing into new territory once more. This time, his collaboration is with Warner Bros. Discovery, crafting the narrative of vampires targeting African Americans in 1932 Mississippi.
In the film, Jordan portrays twin brothers who are ex-soldiers of World War I, named Smoke and Stack. Alongside their cousin Sammie, they embark on starting their first juke joint – a place that offers respite for African American laborers from cotton plantations to dance, socialize, and spend money. Later, as Coogler weaves a violent yet impactful finale, the club becomes a battleground against vampires.
Who Are Sinners‘ Vampires?
Remmick Leads the Vampires Like Bert and Joan
Jack O’Connell’s character, a descendant of the Irish, arrives in town concealing himself from some local Native hunters. As the day ends, he manages to deceive the prejudiced couple Joan and Bert, members of the KKK, into welcoming him into their home. He then consumes them and transforms them into his initial followers within his cult.
Remmick is captivated by the authentic music played at the twins’ juke joint. He, being a preacher’s son and an exceptional guitarist himself, finds a deep connection with Sammie’s soothing, soulful blues. According to the folklore hinted in the opening narrative, this music has the power to summon ancestral spirits.
In the past, Remmick’s family suffered the traumas of slavery, colonization, and genocide in Ireland. This experience has driven him to seek a connection with his lost loved ones, leading him to believe that consuming Sammie and tapping into his powers could provide such a link. To put it simply, he has an extraordinary ability to absorb the memories of others, creating a collective consciousness, and erasing their pain. This helps flesh out Remmick’s character by adding depth to his motivations.
Instead of holding on to their enmity, Joan and Bert find unity under the guidance of the master, focusing on the twins’ gathering. This unexpected act stirs compassion towards characters that might otherwise be seen as monstrous, given the backdrop of sorrow. Fans identify with Remmick’s grief and his quest to create a new family, making them root for these complex characters. In essence, it is not driven by ill-will but rather an attempt to establish a community among those who have suffered or seek redemption – a notion echoed in the series Netflix’s “Midnight Mass.
How Do Sinners’ Vampires Get Into Smoke and Stack’s Party?
Mary Is Turned Into a Vampire, Which Leads to Grace’s Invite
It turns out that Smoke and Stack aren’t raking in a lot of profits from the gathering. However, it’s not just business that’s causing tension; there’s a deep-seated personal issue at play. In fact, Stack had an affair with Mary years ago, only to abandon her without support. As it happens, Mary’s grandmother served as their midwife and helped raise them after their mother passed away, so the betrayal has left Mary feeling bitter and resentful.
At the party following her mother’s funeral, Mary decides to confront the vampires who had been turned away. This action is driven by her curiosity about their wealth, but it results in Remmick, one of them, biting her and using mind control to send her back inside.
Mary unexpectedly finds herself at a gathering where things take an intimate and violent turn when she bites Stack, leading to a series of dark and unsettling events. The festivities come to an abrupt halt, prompting one of the organizers, Bo, to step outside. It is later revealed that Bo, along with several others, has been transformed into a disciple through secret consumption. Annie, Smoke’s former partner and a strong believer in superstitions, becomes suspicious after experiencing strange mental attacks. Heartbroken Grace tries to prevent Bo from returning home and endangering their child, so she waits until the group inside is armed with tools such as garlic, stakes, and silver. In a move that displeases many others, she calls for the tribe to gather as she believes a confrontation is necessary to eliminate the vampires lurking among them.
Sinners Creates a Massive Bloodbath and Spectacle
Annie, Grace, Bo and Many Others Die When Remmick’s Pack Raids
Nearly everyone meets their end, as Stack nips Wunmi Mosaku’s character Annie in the series Sinners, inviting her to become a “sister” among them. However, the shamanic Annie (who has a history with Houdou) had previously asked Smoke to terminate her if this scenario unfolded. He adheres as the heroes embark on their vengeful mission. The confrontation reaches its peak when Pearline, who holds Sammie’s affection, is also transformed. Desperate to escape, Sammie grabs his guitar and ends up in a river with Remmick.
As I watched, it appeared that Smoke was taking matters into his own hands against his twin. Right before Remmick could harm Sammie, Smoke took the reins and ended his life cruelly. Fatefully, the sun rose and burned the flock to ashes. Smoke guided Sammie back home, hoping to set him on a new path. He knew deep down that Sammie yearned for music more than preaching. He simply wanted him to make the right choice and disrupt the cycle of harmful masculinity that had plagued their family. While Sammie’s father was dictating his destiny, Smoke had to slay his abusive father to protect Stack.
In the midst of my church attendance, battered and bleeding, my father pleads for me to abandon the unholy music. In his eyes, it’s not sanctified hymns, but a weapon wielded by sinners. As for Smoke, the mill owner he bought from unexpectedly arrives with his associates from the Ku Klux Klan. Joan and Bert, who were supposed to be part of their heinous plot to murder the brothers and unlawfully reclaim the mill, were also there. Remmick had warned Smoke about these bigots, fearing they would corrupt him and provoke him into a violent confrontation. Fortunately, Smoke has his arsenal from his military service, ranging from his sniper rifle to his grenade. He retaliates, firing upon and blowing them up with explosive force.
Does Smoke Die in Sinners?
Smoke Dies After Killing KKK Members
Due to their criminal past and violent actions during the war, as well as their involvement with gangsters like Al Capone in Chicago, Smoke and his brother were unable to see the consequences of their actions as anything other than a continuation of their sinful lives. They couldn’t find forgiveness for the blood they spilled or the life of crime they led afterwards. With the money they earned from robbing both Irish and Italian gangs during their time with Capone, they were able to open a juke joint, but even this venture seemed cursed. The loss of his brother leaves Smoke feeling like a significant piece of himself is missing.
Smoke seems to pine for Annie, who he parted ways with long ago. She gifted him a charm with extraordinary powers, known as “mojo,” that kept vampires from biting him, although its abilities were unknown to others. In his injured state and prepared for death, Smoke removes the charm. He encounters the spectral forms of Annie and their deceased child, accepting his fate. He desires to journey to the afterlife. With the elimination of the vampires and the KKK, he finds tranquility. He is confident that Sammie will remain safe.
Does Sinners Have a Mid-Credits Scene?
Sinners Mid-Credits Has Old Sammie Meeting Stack and Mary
In the mid-credits scene, an older Sammie, portrayed by the iconic Grammy-winning musician Buddy Guy, is seen running his bar named Pearline’s in 1992 Chicago. He has traveled the world, sung the Blues, and built a reputation after going against his father’s wishes. To everyone’s surprise, Stack and Mary unexpectedly appear and request entry. The bouncer allows them inside, but there is no sign of violence.
They are eager to talk with Sammie about his career decisions, expressing joy for him since they hold a deep affection for him akin to a brother. However, Stack perceives that Sammie’s time is limited, yet he declines their proposition of immortality. After sharing a drink, before parting ways, Sammie confesses that day was the most memorable in his life. That moment symbolized his liberation from the field where he had to meet cotton quotas and under the supervision of his father. Stack feels content because many African Americans didn’t have civil rights in most American regions during that time.
In addition to Sinners’ closing scene, there’s also a post-credit sequence featuring Miles Caton, the actor portraying Sammie. This marks his first film appearance. The movie concludes with an emotional acoustic rendition of “This Little Light of Mine,” a song that echoes his father’s choir from the film’s opening service. This heartfelt performance underscores Sammie’s enduring affection for his family and the church, even in the face of their ancestors being exploited by Christianity and the Bible. However, it suggests that he found some positive aspects within the church as well.
In a brighter corner of the world, Sammie and his guitar serve as beacons, illuminating darkness that others may not see. Despite his father’s doubts, Sammie was certain of this truth, an understanding born from experience. This lesson, though bitterly learned, is one he welcomes. It comes with a cost, but it shows how destructive patterns can transform into something uplifting. Smoke had previously shared that the triumph wasn’t Stack’s from gambling; it belonged to their father. This narrative underscores the power of turning adversity into opportunity. Sammie believed he could shatter vicious cycles of sin and forge a new legacy on his path of self-exploration. Instead of dwelling in the harsh past and its toxic remnants, he chose to walk a road paved with hope and optimism.
How Does Sinners Set Up a Sequel?
Sinners 2 Can Follow Stack and Mary Being Vampires For 60 Years
In the additional scene after the main credits, it is disclosed that Smoke struck a deal with him to spare Sammie and escape town. Overwhelmed by Annie’s demise, Mary departed with her partner as well. This underscores the message that one should not let the loss of loved ones hinder them. They have been wandering across America ever since, accumulating wealth and seemingly building their own group.
On the tabletop lies the setting for narrating the tale of this Bonnie and Clyde-esque pair throughout the decades. A person or their appointed leader could relate this story, detailing how they fought racists, clashed with mobsters, and evaded other vampire hunters such as the Choctaw. This narrative could be transformed into a period drama or an anthology series, capitalizing on the allure of Jordan and Steinfeld’s stardom and their undeniable on-screen romantic connection.

If there’s someone equipped to cultivate a franchise to its peak, that person is undeniably Coogler. The manner in which he employs music as a profound vehicle for storytelling and portrays Stack and Mary as free-spirited vampires suggests a deep desire to delve deeper into their narratives. It would be intriguing to witness the journey of their trauma, both before and after the transformation, how they dealt with condemning their close ones, and if eventually, they emerged as heroes.
The fact that Sammie doesn’t seem frightened by the duo suggests a deep affection and perhaps a selfless nature. Given the current state of confusion with Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Blade, and the positive reception towards Sinners, Warner Bros. Discovery could leverage this as another strong title to bolster their plans beyond Sinners. Notably, Sinners embodies an antihero vibe that comic book enthusiasts would appreciate in a movie or TV series.
Sinners is now playing in theaters.
