The article contains spoilers for Sinners ending.
Ryan Coogler, director of “Sinners,” expresses doubts about a sequel for the horror film. After working on franchise films like “Black Panther” and “Creed,” Coogler delved into an original tale that blended the heartfelt tribute to blues music with the chilling theme of vampires. Starring Michael B. Jordan, who often collaborates with Coogler, the movie centers around twin brothers Smoke and Stack as they establish a juke joint in Mississippi. However, their peaceful night is disrupted when a gang of vampires unleash horror upon them. The film concludes dramatically with a massacre, yet leaves room for possible further development of certain characters.
As I chatted with Ebony, she inquired about the possibility of a sequel. To be honest, it was never an idea that crossed my mind before, but having worked on numerous franchise projects, I felt drawn to something fresh and original. For me, “Sinners” is not just a standalone film, but a complete meal – a finished piece of work.
I never think about that.
For a while now, I’ve been producing franchise movies, and I yearned for a change. I sought the opportunity to work on a movie that felt fresh and authentic to me, something that would offer audiences an original and distinctive experience.
I desired the film to offer a complete dining experience, with an assortment of appetizers, main courses, and desserts. In other words, I wanted every course included. My aim was to create something comprehensive and complete, which is what I’ve been explaining all along. This was my original plan.
What Coogler’s Comment Means For Sinners’ Future
There Are Ways To Turn It Into A Franchise, But It’s Based On Some Factors
In the conclusion of the film “Sinners”, various characters’ destinies are sealed, aligning with Coogler’s statements. Stack succumbs after his fight against the Klan, whereas Sammy departs with his guitar and gains fame as a blues artist. The movie’s mid-credits scene further reveals that Storm and Mary managed to escape the band of vampires and later connect with Sammy in 1992, discussing past events. This suggests that “Sinners” might stand alone as a single movie, particularly if Coogler focuses on other projects such as “Black Panther 3”.
Although several plot threads have been wrapped up, there’s potential for more storytelling. For example, given that Mary and Storm have been together for all these decades, a sequel might explore their whereabouts over time and whether they ever tried to influence others. Furthermore, it’s worth noting that Jordan has expressed an inclination towards creating a prequel, focusing on the twins’ adventures in Chicago. However, the final call would rest with Coogler as he holds the rights to the film series.
Regardless, the probability of this film becoming a franchise hinges on its box office performance, as the horror movie is predicted to earn around $40 million during its first weekend. While that’s an encouraging start, the production cost is estimated to be between $90-100 million, posing a significant hurdle for Warner Bros. to recoup their investment, particularly given the upcoming wave of blockbuster releases. Consequently, this could dampen prospects for extending the Sinners series into a franchise.
Our Take On Whether Sinners Could Become A Franchise
It May Just Be Best As A One-Off
As a movie enthusiast, I can see why many film fans are eagerly anticipating a potential sequel for Sinners, given its exceptional storytelling that’s won critical acclaim and resonated with audiences. However, while director Coogler might be on the verge of another box-office victory, it could still pose a challenge. The movie’s near perfection could make expanding into a franchise less advisable, even though there are possibilities to expand the story. Nevertheless, given that Sinners has wrapped up most of its main plot points, it might be wiser to keep it as a standalone piece rather than risk diluting its quality by stretching the narrative unnecessarily.
