For over seven weeks now, I’ve been holed up at the rundown homestead motel, Theresa and Shermy, my faithful canine companion, being the only urban cowpokes left standing. The tense standoff with the Aryan bikers outside seemed ominous, but it soon became clear it was a DEA trap. As the intricate web of this series’ expanding case and central conspiracy reaches its climax, the penultimate episode propels us forward at a breakneck pace, blending pulp and realism seamlessly within the broader crime genre. The clever use of narrative shorthand keeps things moving, even if it’s not the most artistically crafted installment. However, its deep dives into the gritty, hallucinatory imagery reminiscent of “True Detective” that makes this episode truly stand out amidst the Philadelphia underworld’s murky depths.
Ray and Manny are currently being detained by the authorities. While Manny is being questioned by the DEA, Ray (who they call “the cop killer”) is being closely monitored by police at a hospital. The authorities are listening to all conversations in Ray’s room, so it falls on Theresa to share deep truths about life, relationships, and family as a way to secretly communicate with him. Ray isn’t interested in hearing that his adoptive mother was once his father’s girlfriend, but the point is clear: Love doesn’t always happen in royal families; sometimes, it develops in less ideal circumstances. Theresa and Ray needed each other, she left her old life behind, and they took care of one another. This bond is what we call family. All that remains when we’re gone is this sense of family connection. Theresa touches her chest and pays a bit more attention to fastening her coat, whispering a hidden message as she does so. She found Ray’s note about the money and the code numbers on the two-dollar bills. For now, Ray’s secret investigation is being handled by Theresa. (This theme of surveillance and coded conversations has been explored in previous episodes of “Dope Thief“, such as the conversation between Ray and Son Pham in episode five.)
Simultaneously, Mina delves into her personal inquiry regarding shadows, while Nader hurtles towards a polished yet incorrect resolution of the official probe. It’s like dealing with cops, isn’t it? But our heroine is now operating in Rust Cole territory. Nader has disregarded her intuition entirely, setting off an investigation sequence filled with exercise, scrutinizing files, contemplation accompanied by coffee and cigarettes, and using an old car door as a target at a chain-link fence. Welcome to Cop City! (*bonus) (visually appealing). Instead of opting for therapy, women can become expert sleuths spontaneously. Surprisingly, this approach works, helping Mina escape the cocoon of recent sorrow and enter the subsequent phase: coexisting with pain amidst the living. The penultimate episode finds her spiritual journey culminating in a Michael Mann-esque haiku response to the barroom query that inspired its title.
Kill Hitler, fuck Stalin,
marry Mussolini.
Mussolini is ugly,
But you get to live in Italy.
Regrettably, Manny’s spiritual odyssey concludes in a sad and somewhat predictable manner. This is partly due to its tragic nature, and also because it seems hurried and formulaic. The fact that Manny is overshadowed by Ray, played brilliantly by Brian Tyree Henry, contributes to this feeling. After all, this story primarily belongs to Henry, despite the engaging partnership between Henry and Wagner Moura. Moreover, Manny’s ending carries a raw, pulp-like intensity (though not necessarily sensitive), stemming from his struggle to reconcile his religious principles with the complexities of life, regardless of whether those actions were lawful or unlawful.
It seems quite evident that the prison scenes have a distinct pulp-like quality about them, reminiscent of a movie set for “Saw.” However, it’s safe to say that modern U.S. prisons aren’t being transformed into luxury hotels. Intriguingly, Manny’s demise in prison is underplayed, while Son Pham fends off would-be biker assassins from within his cell, which makes their secretive conversation with Xuan over the prison video call somewhat suspicious (it doesn’t look good for anyone who could use every friend they can find). Meanwhile, Ray grapples with an all-knowing big bad and another challenge similar to the “Yellow King” in a hospital floor that feels more like a labyrinth—with its eerie lack of nursing staff, dim fluorescent lighting, and spooky atmosphere. We’re now on the brink of the final level, facing a cold and formidable climax.
Ray, standing by the elevator door, is prepared to leave with his impending executioner, ready to sacrifice himself for his makeshift family’s cause. In their last conversation on the bus, handcuffed and bound for the death block, he had aggressively granted Manny a blessing to accept a deal, ensuring a life of freedom for both him and Sherry. However, this was a misunderstanding of what Manny truly desired from Ray – not his protection but his admiration. Over time, they became partners in crime and brothers through bonds stronger than blood. Unfortunately, their parting is marked by sorrow and dissonance. For Ray, it’s a harsh realization that fate often has different plans, and they are seldom as dramatic as a self-sacrificing moment of martyrdom.
Michelle stands at the opposite end of the elevator door, holding Mina’s miracle strategy as a shield. As far as Mina is concerned, they can elevate Ray’s worth by accusing him of being a top-tier drug trafficker, which could potentially lure the enigmatic major antagonist into the open. For now, all pieces are in place on both sides of the game board. It remains to be seen how much violence will ensue or if any form of redemption can be found among both the living and the deceased.
