‘Clean Slate’ Canceled After One Season at Amazon

Amazon has canceled the comedy series “Clean Slate” after one season, EbMaster has confirmed.

The series first aired on Amazon Prime Video in February. It featured Laverne Cox, George Wallace, Jay Wilkison, D.K. Uzoukwu, Telma Hopkins, Philip Garcia, and Norah Murphy in leading roles. Notably, it was the final series produced by the iconic Norman Lear before his passing in 2023.

The show’s logline describes the story as focusing on Harry Slate (Wallace), a traditional and frank car wash owner from Alabama who undergoes introspection when his believed-to-be son, now a confident transgender woman named Desiree (Cox), returns to Mobile.

Wallace, Cox, and Dan Ewen teamed up to produce this series. They all held the title of executive producer, joined by Lear, Brent Miller, and Simran Baidwan in that role. The production companies responsible were Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios.

The show initially started its journey on Peacock in 2020, but later transferred to IMDB TV (which became Freevee) in 2021. It got approved for a series in 2022, and subsequently moved to Amazon Prime Video following the closure of Freevee.

Upon its debut, the film “Clean Slate” garnered favorable responses from critics, boasting an impressive 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In her appraisal for EbMaster, Aramide Tinubu stated that while ‘Clean Slate’ is not flawless, it authentically portrays the transgender experience with heartfelt realism. Despite Harry sometimes failing to grasp Desiree’s viewpoint, he extends his support to her even during his most obstinate moments.

Deadline first reported the cancellation.
